The Albright College women's lacrosse team played an excellent first half, leading first place Stevenson University late in the period before ultimately losing 16-7.
Freshman
Erin Farrell had three goals and an assist on the day, while classmate
Amanda Smith added two goals and five draw controls. Sophomore
Meghan Wilson added a goal, four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Rookie goalie
Emily Hutson finished with 12 saves, including a string of good stops to keep the Mustangs at bay early in the game. Defender
Jordyn Kurtz picked up a team-high four ground balls.
After a Hutson save on
Amanda LeGar, Stevenson tallied to open the scoring just 40 seconds in. It was the only goal they would record in the first 23:57 of play as Hutson made eight first half saves and the Lion defense caused six turnovers.
Hutson made a great kick save on
Kellie McLaughlin and
Brianna McCormick picked up the ground ball. Smith was saved at the other end, but shooting space was whistled and the Lion freshman converted a free position goal to tie the game at 1-1.
After a yellow card on Albright's
Nicole Klusewitz, Hutson made a shorthanded save on LeGar before stopping
Mandy Marston from longer range.
Albright had a string of chances to take a lead midway through the first half. Farrell got off a high shot in traffic that was saved, and Rohrbach made a nice cut but was also denied by the Stevenson goaltender.
Rebecca Roman got a look following a turnover but shot high, and Kurtz was saved on a free position shot.
Hutson stopped McLaughlin on a free position from dead center, and Gabrielle DiLilla then caused a turnover. With 7:37 left in the first half, the Lions finally took a 2-1 lead on Farrell's solo move- the game's first goal in over 16 minutes.
After the Mustangs tied things up, Hutson made a point-blank stop on
Marissa Meiklejohn, leading to a Farrell shot at the other end that was stopped. LeGar gave Stevenson a lead going into halftime, off a great pass from Meiklejohn.
Albright was unlucky early in the second half, as
Tori Wagner slapped the ball in following a loose ball scramble. Stevenson then countered off a Lion turnover and scored again, 38 seconds later, for a 6-3 lead.
Smith cut it to 6-4 with 24 minutes remaining on a free position shot, but Wilson was soon saved and again the Mustangs went the other way for a transition goal.
Albright is 8-4, 2-3 and will look to get back on track in the Commonwealth Conference with a Wednesday trip to Widener.
