Freshman
Amanda Smith struck in double-overtime as the Albright College women's lacrosse team knocked off Widener on the road, 14-13 on Wednesday.
Smith, the team's leader in draw controls, won the draw to open the second extra period and took it all the way, scoring 11 seconds in without anybody else touching the ball.
The Lions had scored in the first overtime period, which is not sudden death. Sophomore
Meghan Wilson won the initial draw, and then scored after a minute of Lion possession. Widener answered however, with
Laura Kalbach converting a free position shot.
Smith finished with six goals and eight draw controls, including one of each on the deciding play. Classmate
Erin Farrell scored five times and controlled two draws.
Wilson finished with two goals and an assist, while fellow sophomore
Nicole Rohrbach scored once.
Defenseman Jordyn Kutz picked up three ground balls and caused one turnover, while freshman goalie
Emily Hutson stopped seven shots to pick up the victory.
Albright had led 8-6 at halftime. Widener had cut it to one with 32 seconds remaining in the period, but Smith won the ensuing draw and Farrell scored three seconds before the break.
The Lions then led 12-10 late, but the Pride rallied for two goals in a 64-second stretch to force overtime. Rohrbach had a free position shot late to win, but it was saved by Widener goalie
Megan Dunn.
Three Widener players had hat tricks- Kalbach,
Meghan Garvey and
Mackenzie Lindquis.
Albright improves to 9-4, 3-3 and will travel to face defending Commonwealth Conference champion Elizabethtown on Saturday.
