The Albright College men's lacrosse team will host rival Widener in a Commonwealth Conference semifinal, Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Shirk Stadium.
Both teams are currently receiving votes in the national polls. Widener reached as high at #16 this season, before losing 10-9 to the Lions in Reading.
Every game between the two teams has been hotly contested, with Albright taking overtime wins over the perennial contender Pride in 2012 and 2013 and Widener getting revenge in last season's playoffs.
In that game, held 363 days ago in Shirk Stadium, the Lions took a quick 5-0 lead but were shut down the rest of the way in a 7-5 loss.
Robert Clemens had two goals and two assists in that game, while goalie
Mac Nestler totaled six saves.
In Albright's overtime thriller this season,
Ryan Turner scored the game-winner off an assist from fellow sophomore
Mike Southwick. Sophomores
Philip Potter and
T.J. Holston each had three-goal, two-assist performances in the Lions' first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent, while sophomore
Darian Meador won 15-of-21 draws and picked up 12 ground balls. Defensively,
Joe Devinney had five ground balls and
Mike Donohoe caused three turnovers.
There will be 12 2013 All-Commonwealth Conference selections playing tonight. Potter and Holston earned their second consecutive nods for Albright, while Southwick and Meador were named to the second team.
Sean Cunningham and freshman
Matthew Lomady were honorable mention.
For Widener, both Clemens and Nestler made the list, as did senior attack
Johnny Casey (37 goals, 18 assists, 55 points).
Physical long-pole midfielder
Charlie Bytheway (46 ground balls, 10 caused turnovers) was an honorable mention selection, while
Ryan Eidenshenk and
Casey Decker were also named All-Commonwealth.
Albright is 13-3, 6-2 on the year while Widener is 10-5, 6-2. Tomorrow's winner will play the winner of #4 Stevenson-Lebanon Valley in Saturday's championship.
