Albright Men's Lax Hosting ECACs, Will Face LVC in Semifinal

It's déjà vu for the Albright College men's lacrosse team as they host the semifinals and finals of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic championship playoffs this weekend.

The Lions will be playing their fourth playoff game in just their second varsity season. All four games have come at home, and Albright will now have seen conference rivals Widener University and Lebanon Valley College each year.

Albright (13-4) will play LVC (12-6) at 3 p.m. in one semifinal tomorrow, while Frostburg State (12-6) and Centenary (13-3) face off at noon. The championship game will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Shirk Stadium.

The Lions made the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs in their inaugural 2012 campaign, beating Lebanon Valley 6-4 in the opening round before falling 7-5 to Widener. Albright hosted Widener again in this season's Commonwealth Conference semifinals (a 6-5 overtime loss) and now comes full circle with another home playoff showdown with the Dutchmen.

This will in one sense be the third time the two sides meet this year, as their regular season meeting was halted at halftime due to lightning and resumed 12 days later.

Albright is 3-0 all-time against LVC, but the games have always been close. The Lions rallied from a two-goal fourth quarter deficit to win 12-11 in the 2012 regular season, and again trailed by two in the second half of their conference playoff win. LVC led by one goal with 11 minutes to play in this year's meeting before the Red and White stormed back yet again for a 10-7 win.

The Albright offense has closed two of those three meetings on four-goal unanswered runs, and scored three straight in the fourth quarter of the other game.

Sophomores Philip Potter (34g, 38a) and T.J. Holston (42g, 18a) earned their second All-Commonwealth selections this spring and lead the Lions in scoring. Classmate Ryan Turner has a team-high 45 goals.

Albright's defense has been solid all year, led by goalie Jordan DiZenzo (12-3, 7.32 GAA, .570 save percentage). Key defenders include Joe Devinney (50 ground balls, 44 caused turnovers), Sean Cunningham (30 GBs, 24 CTs) and Mike Donohoe (41 GBs, 29 CTs).

Lebanon Valley is led by first team All-Conference attack Malik Pedroso (50g, 31a). Faceoff man Scott Sutton (.520, 102 GBs) will battle with Albright's Darian Meador (.637, 138 GBs) on the draw.

LVC is 2-1 in playoff games this year, beating Messiah 12-3 in a Commonwealth play-in game and dispatching Alfred 11-5 in the ECAC quarterfinals (top-seeded Albright had a first round bye).

Frostburg State comes from a competitive Capital Athletic Conference, where they were ousted in the first round before knocking off MAC-Freedom member DeSales 14-6 in the ECAC quarterfinals. Spenser Love (39g, 15a) leads the team in scoring, while sophomore defenseman Zach Burkhart has caused 46 turnovers on the season.

Centenary's quarterfinal with SUNY-Canton was canceled due to lightning, with the Cyclones leading 3-2. Due to travel concerns involving final exams, Centenary was granted the default place in this weekend's semifinals as the higher seed. The Cyclones feature senior Conor Nolan, who needs one more assist to equal the school career mark of 126.
