LIONS LAST WEEK:
The Lions were one yard away from taking control on two separate occasions but ultimately fell as time expired, 20-17 to #21 Delaware Valley in last Saturday's Pretzel Bowl.
Shirk Stadium was playing host to the 63rd Annual Pretzel Bowl, a fundraiser for the Rajah Shriners' Hospital for Children. Albright running back
Ty Hughes and DVC kicker Brandon Snyder were named Game MVPs. Hughes totaled 144 yards on 33 carries, scoring twice but falling inches short of a third score that would have given Albright a late two-score advantage. Snyder tied the game from 37 yards in the fourth quarter and then won it from 25 out as the clock hit zeros.
Leading 17-14 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Lions had second-and-goal from the one yard line. Hughes was stopped on a dive, and Albright fumbled the shotgun snap on third down.
Daniel Sobolewski's field goal then went wide left.
After Snyder tied it from 37 yards, Albright drove down into Delaware Valley territory with 2:36 remaining. Facing 4th-and-1, the Lions went for it over kicking the field goal and were again stuffed at the line of scrimmage. DVC quarterback Aaron Wilmer hit Rasheed Bailey across midfield, and then Kyle Schuberth rushed to the 24. On 3rd down, Wilmer found Danny Lopez down to the eight-yard line, setting up an easy winner for Snyder.
PREVIOUS MEETING:
Albright scored the first 41 points of the game as the Lions cruised to a 41-10 Homecoming victory over King's College, last season in Shirk Stadium.
Albright's quarterbacks were a perfect 9-of-9 in the first half as the Lions scored touchdowns on their first four drives.
TJ Luddy was 9-of-10 for 241 yards and three TDs, while
Adam Galczynski went 3-for-4 for 50 yards.
Scott Pillar had an outstanding game, catching five balls for 150 yards and two scores. Fullback and fellow 2012 BSN All-American
Marty Reinhardt rushed for 34 yards and two touchdowns.
Daniel McNair caught three passes for 84 yards (one TD).
The defense looked to grab a second consecutive shutout (after blanking FDU-Florham 45-0 the previous week) and held King's scoreless into the fourth quarter.
Matt Pattison had a sack and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
NATIONAL WEEKLY HONORS:
After a week one victory over Kean University, Albright kicker
Daniel Sobolewski (three FGs, 3-3 PATs, 2 touchbacks) was named a BSN National Special Teams Player of the Week, the USA College Football National Special Teams Player of the Week, and was listed on the D3football.com Team of the Week. Safety
Drew Peterson (two interceptions) was also named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, and earned honorable mention honors from USA College Football.
PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS:
The Lions were well-represented on 2013 Preseason All-American teams, with three players receiving a total of six selections. Senior safety
Drew Peterson was a first team USA College Football, second team D3 Senior Classic and third team BSN Preseason All-American. Fifth-year senior
Matt Pattison earned second team USA College Football and honorable mention D3 Senior Classic honors, and senior tight end
Eric Wade was a fourth team USA College Football selection.
ALBRIGHT WEBCASTS:
Live video streaming will be provided for all home Albright football games, with free online audio of away contests. All home video contests will cost $5.95 for a single game; a three-month all-access pass is available for $19.95. Bob McCool will be the voice of the Lions again this season.
SERIES:
Albright leads 12-5-1 in a series that dates back to 1993. The Lions were unbeaten in the first six meetings, followed by a 5-1 Monarch run from 1999-2006, with Albright taking the last six matchups since that point.
HEAD COACHES:
John Marzka, in his seventh season at Albright, holds a career mark of 46-24.
Jeff Knarr is 4-28 in his fourth season with the Monarchs.
ALBRIGHT OFFENSE:
Running back
Ty Hughes, a fifth-year senior, earned Pretzel Bowl MVP and MAC Weekly Honor Roll nods after totaling 144 yards vs. Delaware Valley. He broke the 100-yard barrier for the first time this season, after reaching 90+ yards in each of the first two contests. He now has six career 100-yard performances.
Senior
Daniel McNair had the MAC Play of the Week after a diving catch down the one-yard line. He has led Albright's pass attack, with 234 yards in three games.
ALBRIGHT DEFENSE:
Despite a 1-2 record, the Lion defense has held opponents to 19.3 points per game. That includes a touchdown scored against the offense, and Albright's defensive unit has also earned a safety. The Lions have 21 tackles for loss (led by 5.0 from
Mark Capetola, the 2012 MAC leader in that category). Albright has also forced six fumbles, but only managed to recover two of them.
ALBRIGHT SPECIAL TEAMS:
Kicker
Daniel Sobolewski is 5-for-7 from field goals, with one of those misses coming from 48 yards. Punter
TJ Luddy has averaged 36.0 yards on 15 punts.
KING'S OFFENSE:
Running back Kyle McGrath has totaled 132 yards in two games, rushing for one score. He earned second team All-MAC honors in 2012. King's other returning All-Conference selection from last year is tackle Kyle Grampp. Quarterback Tyer Hartranft returns after starting last season; he has thrown two TDs to one interceptions, but has only completed 26-of-69 (37.7%) passes this year.
KING'S DEFENSE:
The Monarch defense held William Paterson to just 54 yards rushing in King's season opener, but still took a tough 21-19 loss. Fifth-year senior Ron Garrett returned a fumble 95 yards for a touchdown in the Monarch's second loss (vs. Lebanon Valley).
KING'S SPECIAL TEAMS:
Dan Kempa handles most of the Monarch's returns, running back six kicks for an average of 14.7 yards this season. King's uses two different kickers, as sophomore Kevin Mulvihill takes field goals and freshman Mikhail Kniaziewicz handles kickoffs.
ECAC SOUTH-EAST CHAMPIONS:
In a crazy first minute of the fourth quarter, Albright erased a 14-point deficit in 14 seconds and went on to win the 2012 ECAC South-East Bowl, 38-34 over Franklin & Marshall.
After F&M punched it in for a 28-14 lead on the opening play of the fourth quarter, junior
Daniel McNair took the ensuing kickoff back 88 yards for the touchdown. The Diplomats then fumbled Albright's kickoff on their own four-yard line, where it was recovered by
Sean Cunningham on the one.
Ty Hughes carried it in on the next play, giving the Lions two touchdowns in 14 seconds (and a combined three touchdowns for the two squads in a 28-second span).
The action was far from over, as F&M's
Paul McGann got behind the Lion defense on the next play from scrimmage but was stripped. Cunningham came up with the ball for his second fumble recovery in a span of 18 seconds. Albright quarterback
TJ Luddy completed a tough third down pass to
Caleb Shilko to the four-yard line, and then snuck it in with 8:33 left to put the Lions ahead 35-28.
PILLAR GETS NFL CHANCE:
Albright wide receiver
Scott Pillar, a 2012 AFCA Coaches All-American and two-time BSN All-American, signed a rookie free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams after draft weekend this past spring. He completed rookie mini-camp but was released from the 90-man roster before regular camp began.
MAC STANDINGS:
Four teams have started the MAC schedule at 2-0. Three were expected- Delaware Valley, Widener and Lycoming- but third-year program Stevenson also sits atop the standings following wins over Albright and FDU-Florham. There will only be one undefeated squad left after this weekend, and the conference will find out just how far Stevenson has come, as the 3-0 Mustangs travel to play the 3-0 and 22nd-ranked Delaware Valley College Aggies.
