READING, Pa. -- After four consecutive defeats the Albright football coaching staff developed the mantra of winning each week. That theory has resulted in back-to-back victories over FDU-Florham and King's. The Lions will once again attempt to go 1-0 this week as it heads to Wilkes for a Middle Atlantic Conference game at 1 p.m. in Schmidt Stadium.
Albright needed double overtime last week to edge King's 30-24 as freshman
Chris Dawson dashed in for a 23-yard touchdown lifting the Lions to the victory. Dawson finished the game with a career-high 53 yards and scored both of the Lions touchdowns in the overtime periods.
The ground game has been a key reason Albright has been able to post back-to-back victories. The Lions churned out a season-high 236 yards on the ground in the victory over FDU-Florham and added 151 yards last week against the Monarchs.
Sophomore
Danny Tighe has been the Lions top ball carrier in the last two games. Tighe rushed for a career-best 143 yards against FDU-Florham and added 59 yards last week against King's.
Junior quarterback
Patrick Wise has also been more consistent in the last three games. After throwing three interceptions in the loss to Stevenson, Wise has not thrown an interception in the last three games and has tossed four touchdowns.
Vinny Williams has hauled in nine catches for 150 yards and a touchdown in the past two games, while
Dan Grillo had a touchdown grab against both FDU-Florham and King's.
The Albright offensive line has not only opened holes in the running game, but also has done a better job of protecting Wise in the pocket. After surrendering a combined 16 sacks against Widener, Stevenson and Delaware Valley the line of
Jake O'Brien,
Trent Koch,
Jonni Cassano,
Kent Mertens and
John McKeever have allowed only one sack in the last two games.
The Albright defense has registered at least two sacks in five of the seven games this season and
Jamal Hayden and
Rich Kuhn lead the way with 4.5 sacks each.
Mark Capetola and
Steve Barroso each have 4.0 sacks on the season.
Barroso earned his second MAC Defensive Player of the Week honor following the victory over King's and also was named the ECAC Southeast Defensive Player of the Week and was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.
All-American kicker
Daniel Sobolewski was named the MAC Special Teams Player of the Week after connecting on a school-record 52-yard field goal in the win over King's.
Wilkes enters the game with a 2-5 overall record and a 2-4 mark in conference play. The Colonels have dropped two straight games and have been outscored 105-12 in those two games.
Albright enters the game with a 3-4 overall record and a 2-4 record in the MAC. The Lions have won three consecutive games against Wilkes and leads the alltime series 22-16.
