READING, Pa. -- At the halfway point of the season what does an undefeated record, a glittering No. 17 national ranking and sitting atop the Middle Atlantic Conference get you? Quite honestly, nothing. With that knowledge in mind, the Albright football team returns to work on Saturday (Oct. 17) when it visits FDU-Florham for a MAC contest scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
The Lions, who moved up two spots to No. 17 in the latest American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, will face a stiff challenge from a much improved FDU-Florham squad. The Devils, who are 2-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play, led Albright 20-17 in the third quarter of last year's game in Shirk Stadium before the Lions pulled away for a 38-20 victory.
Albright enters the game with a 5-0 overall record and a 4-0 mark in the MAC and sit alone in first place in the conference standings. The Lions are also ranked No. 21 in the latest D3football.com Top 25 Poll.
The Albright offense has improved in every game this season and are averaging 51.5 points per game in the last two contests. The Lions defeated Wilkes 62-9 last week and rolled up 593 yards of total offense. The points scored and total yards were the most for Albright since a 65-26 victory over Wilkes during the 2011 season in which the Lions accumulated 675 yards of total offense.
Freshman quarterback
Mike Knight was 13-of-16 passing for 197 yards and also rushed for a team-high 89 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Lions offense against Wilkes.
Brian Wickkiser rushed for 42 yards and a pair of touchdowns to up his conference-leading rushing touchdown total to six.
Malik Gilmore grabbed five passes for 94 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter from backup quarterback
Alec Vignola, while
Gerrod Gainer hauled in five passes for 54 yards and a touchdown.
Senior All-American kicker
Daniel Sobolewski tied a pair of Albright school records in the victory. He drilled field goals of 39 and 36 yards to up his career total to 44, which ties the school record held by Dennis Unger. Sobolewski also finished the game with 14 points giving him 255 in his career, which ties the mark also held by Unger.
The Albright defense continued its dominant play on the season by limiting Wilkes to one touchdown, 35 yards rushing and 159 yards of total offense. The Lions have surrendered just 42 points in the last four games, which marks the best four-game stretch since the 2008 season. Albright is currently ranked 23rd in the nation allowing 13.0 points per game and 26th nationally allowing 280.4 yards of total offense per contest.
Junior linebacker
Kevin Mason tops the Lions with 35 tackles and ranks fourth in the nation averaging 0.60 forced fumbles per contest. Senior defensive lineman
Jamal Hayden leads the team with 3.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss, while senior
Steve Barroso has 33 tackles and is ranked 31st in the nation averaging 0.60 interceptions per game.
The Devils have dropped their last two games to Lebanon Valley and Delaware Valley, but own victories over Wilkes and the College of New Jersey.
Albright leads the all-time series with FDU-Florham 18-6 and has won eight straight meetings versus the Devils. FDU-Florham is one of three conference schools, along with King's and Misericordia, that have never defeated the Lions under the direction of head coach
John Marzka.
