READING, Pa. -- The Albright football players have worked since August to be in this position, which is to be playing meaningful football games in November. The Lions will do exactly that on Saturday (Nov. 7) when it faces Stevenson at Mustang Stadium at 1 p.m.
The Lions are currently tied for first place in the Middle Atlantic Conference standings with Delaware Valley and Stevenson. The winner of Saturday's game between the Lions and the Mustangs will leave the field still in first place.
If Albright, which is ranked 20th in the nation, is the team is in a celebratory mood on Saturday it will have to overcome a significant challenge from Stevenson as the Mustangs possess one of the top defensive units in the conference.
Something will have to give on Saturday as this contest will feature strength against strength. Albright leads the conference averaging 37.2 points per contest, while Stevenson leads the league allowing just 13.6 points per game. Albright is second in the MAC with only 13 turnovers for the year, while Stevenson leads NCAA Division III with 35 takeaways.
Following its only loss of the season, Albright got back on the winning track with a 38-28 victory over King's last Saturday. The Lions defense unit turned in another outstanding performance as Albright returned two interceptions for touchdowns including a 100-yard return by senior
Colton Ryan. Senior linebacker
Demonya Womack registered a career-high 13 tackles, while
Kali Boyce also returned an interception for a score.
Albright is no slouch when it comes to creating turnovers also as the Lions are ranked fourth in the nation in interceptions with 17 and fourth in the country with 26 total takeaways. Albright tops the nation in defensive touchdowns with six, which includes a fumble return for a touchdown, a blocked punt returned for a touchdown and four interceptions returned for scores.
Steve Barroso has put together a brilliant senior season and is one of only two players in Division III with at least 50 tackles, five interceptions and three fumble recoveries. He leads the Lions with 53 tackles, five interceptions and three fumble recoveries. He also has two forced fumbles and five passes defended.
Jamal Hayden leads the Lions with 10.0 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks, while
Rich Kuhn has 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
Freshman
Mike Knight leads the Albright offensive attack as he leads the conference in completion percentage (62.8), passing efficiency (130.3) and has the fewest interceptions thrown among quarterbacks who have started all of their teams games. He has thrown for 1,421 yards and 11 touchdowns and also rushed for 257 yards.
Roemello Monroe is the Lions top ground gainer on the season having rushed for 290 yards, while
Brian Wickkiser leads the team with six rushing touchdowns.
Sophomore
Malik Jackson leads Albright with 38 receptions on the season, and
Khari Jefferson has hauled in a team-high five touchdown receptions.
Senior kicker
Daniel Sobolewski is 11-of-15 on his field goal attempts this season and ranks fifth in the nation in field goals per game.
