CHESTER, Pa. – The underclassman led the Albright women's lacrosse team to its second conference victory as the visiting Lions defeated Widener 17-11 on Tuesday evening.
Freshmen
Devon Mela and
Kelly Baumann and sophomore
Sophie Bass all recorded a hat trick in the contest to help Albright improve its record to 6-5 and 2-1 in the MAC. Widener drops to 3-7 and 0-3 in the conference.
Widener netted the first goal of the game less than three minutes in. However, the Pride's lead would not last long as the Lions offense exploded for seven of the next eight goals. Bass, Baumann, Mela and
Jacqui Montague ignited a 4-0 run to take the lead with 17:39 remaining in the opening half. A goal by Meg Steffney of Widener broke up the Lions run. Bass shifted the momentum back to Albright scoring her second goal of the game before
Patricia Horgan scored her first. Mela handed the Lions a 7-2 lead with 13:51 remaining.
Albright continued to add to its lead as the final minutes ticked away. Montague scored her second of the game to hand the Lions an 8-3 lead.
Corinne Donohue and Baumann scored the final Lions goal of the first half as the Lions took a 10-6 lead into halftime.
Albright continued to dominate in the second half. Mela recorded her hat trick only a 1:42 in to begin a Lions run. After a Donohue goal made it 12-6, Bass tallied her own hat trick to pad the lead. Widener continued its comeback attempt but Albright kept the lead out of reach.
Danielle Carey scored her lone goal of the game with 17 minutes remaining to hand the Lions a 14-8 lead. Baumman scored her third and final goal with less than four minutes to play, while
Mariah Cullen scored the final two Albright goals of the game.
Senior Haley Joyce made eight saves in net to earn the win.
Albright returns home on Saturday when it hosts Lebanon Valley at 1 p.m. at Shirk Stadium. The Lions will honor its seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
