ECAC Women's Soccer Championship Preview

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's soccer team will be hosting the fourth pod in the ECAC Women's Soccer Championship this weekend at Shirk Stadium. Albright is the top seed and will host No. 4 seed Cedar Crest on Saturday at 11 a.m., while No. 2 seed Westminster and No. 3 seed Alfred will do battle at 2 p.m.

The two winners will play in the pod's championship game on Sunday at 12 p.m. for the right to advance to next weekend's ECAC Semifinals. Here is a preview of the pod for this weekend.

#1 Albright Lions (11-4-2)
Head Coach: Pat Stanco, 14th season, 127-114-26 at Albright

Albright was selected as the No. 1 seed and earned hosting rights for the third consecutive year after an 11-4-2 mark in the regular season. The Lions advanced to the MAC Semifinals before dropping a 3-0 decision to Arcadia. Sophomore forward Lauren Haley led the team and ranked second in the MAC Commonwealth with 13 goals, while leading the conference in game-winning goals with five. The Lions also feature freshman midfielder Autumn Bieber who sits two assists shy of the program's record for helpers in a single season (11) and senior midfielder Kennedy Lutz who ranked second on the team with eight goals and converted five of six penalty kick opportunities. Defensively, senior Erica Bross earned All-MAC Commonwealth honors for the fourth straight season and classmate Alexis Tunney was named to the second team after posting a 1.05 GAA and four shutouts. Albright notched wins over Juniata and Penn State Harrisburg to advance to the ECAC Semifinals a year ago before dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to Springfield.
 
#2 Westminster Titans (15-5-1)
Head Coach: Girish Thakar, 17th season, 216-110-33 at Westminster
Key Players (Presidents' Athletic Conference): Keely Birsic 12 G, 7 A, 31 pts / Kayla Trozzi 9 G, 3 A, 21 pts / Ashley Frank 2 G, 6 A, 10 pts / Camille Holzschuh 0.81 GAA, .846 SV%, six shutouts
Notable Results: Chatham (W, 2-1), @ Geneva (W, 1-0), Washington & Jefferson (W, 3-2)

Westminster earned the No. 2 seed in the pod after posting a 15-5-1 mark. The Titans were the No. 3 seed in the PAC Tournament and advanced to the championship game before falling to Grove City on penalty kicks. Senior forward Keely Birsic led the team in goals (12) and assists (7), while junior Kayla Trozzi added nine goals and three assists of her own. The duo earned First Team All-PAC honors and were joined on the all-league teams by freshman Jocelyn Gillette and sophomore Regan Moorhouse (second team), while freshman Camille Holzschuh was named to the Honorable Mention team after posting a 0.81 GAA and six shutouts in 21 games for the Titans. Westminster fell to Frostburg State by a 2-1 score in the 2017 ECAC Opening Round.

#3 Alfred Saxons (11-7)
Head Coach: Corey Yanni, 2nd Season, 18-16-3 at Alfred, 24-29-3 overall
Key Players (Empire 8): Emily Wright 4 G, 7 A, 15 pts / Amanda Guariglia 6 G, 12 pts, 3 GWG / Makenzie Cashmer 1.11 GAA, six shutouts
Notable Results: Keuka (W, 2-1), @ D'Youville (W, 2-1), St. John Fisher (W, 3-0)

The Saxons earned the No. 3 seed after putting together an 11-7 mark in the regular season, which marked their most successful campaign since an 11-4-1 season in 1999. Senior Emily Wright led the team in assists (7) and ranked second in goals; Wright's seven assists are the second most in a single season in program history and just one shy of the record (8). Sophomore Amanda Guariglia paced the team with six goals on the year including three game-winners and the Saxons are led in net by freshman Makenzie Cashmer who registered a 1.11 GAA and six shutouts. This marks the third ever ECAC berth for Alfred and their first since capturing the championship in 1989.

#4 Cedar Crest Falcons (13-4)
Head Coach: Sarah Wolcott, 5th season, 34-46-8 at Cedar Crest
Key Players (Colonial States Athletic Conference): Daria Warner 14 G, 1 A, 29 pts / Adrianna Tennis 6 G, 8 A, 20 pts / Erika D'Angelo 5 G, 2 A, 12 pts / Morgan Maddock 0.96 GAA, eight shutouts
Notable Results: John Jay (W, 7-2), Cairn (W, 2-0 & W, 2-1)

The No. 4 seed Cedar Crest is coming off their best season in school history, a campaign that saw them post a 13-4 mark during the regular season and advance to the CSAC Championship season before falling to Centenary (NJ) by a 2-0 score. The 13 wins for Cedar Crest are the most in a single season since collecting 10 wins in 2004. Head coach Sarah Wolcott was named the CSAC Coach of the Year and senior goalkeeper Morgan Maddock earned First Team All-CSAC honors after posting a 0.96 GAA and eight shutouts in 17 games for the Titans. Nine other Falcons earned all-league honors including sophomore forward Daria Warner who posted a team-leading 14 goals and classmate Adrianna Tennis who compiled six goals and eight assists during the regular season.
