PREVIEW: Football to Face King's On the Road Saturday

The Albright Lions football team will travel to face King's on Saturday afternoon.
 

The Lions suffered a heartbreaking 31-28 loss to Wilkes last Saturday afternoon in the 70th annual Pretzel Bowl. Albright took a 14-7 lead into halftime following a 71-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Todd Shelley to classmate wide receiver Carmine Azzari. A pair of second half touchdowns from senior Malik Bootman gave the Lions a 28-17 lead with 4:25 left in regulation. The Colonels responded with a touchdown just over a minute later to make it a 28-24 contest, and were able to stop the Lions on their next offensive series. Wilkes scored the go-ahead touchdown off a 46-yard pass with 33 seconds left in regulation to steal the win from the Lions.  

 
Meanwhile, the The Monarchs suffered a 48-15 loss to No. 10 Delaware Valley last Saturday afternoon on the road. King's stunned the Aggies early with a 16-yard pick-six from senior linebacker Brendan Mozeleski to take a 7-0 lead. However, the Aggies rattled off 42 unanswered points behind a 35-point second quarter to take command of the game. The Monarchs added one more touchdown in the second half plus a 90-yard PAT return to from Mozeleski to get an extra two points.
 

THE LAST MATCHUP
The Lions were defeated by the Monarchs in their last meeting during the 2019 season, 36-16. Albright fell behind early in the contest 14-0 before making it a six-point game before halftime. King's reeled off 16-striaght points to take a 30-8 lead in the third quarter. Albright would pull within 30-16 but that would be as close as they would get for the remainder of the contest. Four turnovers plagued the Lions on the afternoon.
 

ALL OVER THE FIELD
Senior wide receiver Malik Bootman did a little of everything for the Lions against Wilkes last Saturday. Bootman tallied a pair of touchdowns and totaled 70 yards between rushing and receiving yards. It was the second multi-TD game of the season for Bootman after his three touchdown performance against Western Connecticut State. His efforts earned him Pretzel Bowl MVP as well on Albright's side. Bootman leads the team with seven total touchdowns on the season and in scoring as well. His total touchdown amount has also eclipsed his career-high of five in 2019. Bootman has taken over the team lead in receiving touchdowns and ranks second with 257 receiving yards on 26 catches.
 

WORTH THE WAIT
Senior wide receiver Carmine Azzari recorded his first career touchdown reception just before halftime against Wilkes. Azzari hauled in a 71-yard pass from senior quarterback Todd Shelley in the final minute of the second quarter to score. Azzari is has seen action in all six games for the Lions, and has set career-highs in every offensive statistical category. He has caught seven passes for 120 yards and one touchdown this season.
 

BIG MAC
Sophomore safety Ryan MacFarlane recorded two interceptions last Saturday against Wilkes. It was MacFarlane's first two career collegiate interceptions, and the first time a Lions defender grabbed two interceptions in a single-game since senior safety Armon Jefferson in 2018 which also came against Wilkes. MacFarlane now sits behind Jefferson in second on the team with interceptions. He has started in every game for the Lions at free safety this season, and ranks third on the team with 36 total tackles (19 solo).
 

BEHIND THE LINE
Sophomore linebacker Josh Scurry has made a habit of stopping opponent's offenses in the backfield this season. Scurry leads the team with 5.5 tackles for loss on the season after recording two last Saturday against Wilkes. Scurry has started all six games at linebacker this season and has totaled 21 total tackles (10 solo). He also has two pass break-ups on the season as well. 

SESAY ISLAND
Junior cornerback Omar Sesay leads the MAC with six pass break-ups so far this season. He recorded a single game career-high of three passes broken up against Wilkes this past Saturday. Sesay also registered a career-high 10 tackles (six solo) against the Colonels. Sesay has now eclipsed his previous season-high of 35 tackles that was set back in his first season of 2019, and is on pace to top his career-high of eight passes broken up. He has started all but one game at Albright since 2019.
 

WAY BACK
Sophomore linebacker Javontae Wayman create d his first collegiate turnover against Wilkes last Saturday. Wayman forced a fumble off a sack in the third quarter and recovered the ball for the Lions. All three actions were the first recorded in his collegiate career. Wayman posted four tackles in the contest (two solo) and has recorded 30 tackles (15 solo) on the season. He has started in all but one game this season for the Lions at linebacker.
 

ABOUT KING'S
King's is averaging 10.4 points per game on offense, and are led by a pair of dynamic senior wide receivers in Gabe Boccella, and Tim Constantino. Boccella holds a one yard edge over Constantino for the team lead in receiving yards at 235, while Constantino is tied for the team lead with one touchdown reception. Boccella had a big game against the Lions in 2019 when he caught five passes for 126 yards and one touchdown. The Monarchs have used a pair of quarterbacks to split time under center this season. Senior Tyler Moore has passed for 612 yards and two touchdowns, while classmate Tekoah Guedes has thrown for 216 yards and one touchdown. Guedes is a dual-threat quarterback as he leads the team with 172 yards on the ground and one touchdown. On defense, the Monarchs have had success defending the run so far this season as they rank fourth by allowing just 108.6 yards on the ground. Mozeleski has been a stalwart on defense for the Monarchs as he leads the team and ranks sixth in the conference with 45 total tackles and ranks fifth with 7.5 tackles for loss. He also ranks second on the team with 2.5 sacks. Junior defensive lineman Dallas Solomon leads the team and is tied for third in the conference with three sacks on the season. Four different Monarchs have recorded an interception this season.
