Women's Lacrosse to Face Widener in Commonwealth Tournament

READING, Pa. – The Albright women's lacrosse team will travel to face Widener for the first round of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament tomorrow, April 27th, at 6:00pm.

MAC Commonwealth Tournament: Albright is the No. 6 seed in the tournament and faces the No. 3 seed Widener. The winner will face either the No. 2 seed York or the No. 7 seed Hood on Thursday, April 29th for the semifinal round. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 1st.
 
Records: Albright enters the tournament with a 7-6 overall record and 4-4 in conference play. The Lions closed out their regular season Saturday in a 16-14 loss to FDU-Florham in MAC crossover play. Widener is 6-5 overall and holds a 5-3 conference record. They closed out the regular season on a two-game win streak after defeating Alvernia 17-3 and upsetting Stevenson 8-7 in overtime.
 
Scouting the Lions: Albright ranks sixth in the MAC Commonwealth in goals per game and fourth in shots per game with 29.42. The Lions also rank second in both ground balls per game and caused turnovers per game. Junior Lauren China leads the Lions in scoring with 34 goals and seven assists for 41 points on the season. China ranks seventh in the MAC Commonwealth in goals per game with 2.58 and leads in shots per game with 6.33. Classmate Abbie Moist leads the team in assists with 11 and has tallied 16 goals for 27 points. Junior Maddie Taylor leads the team in draw controls with 54 and ranks seventh in the conference in draw controls per game with 4.33. Senior goalkeeper Terae Mason ranks seventh in the conference in goals against average with 10.97 and sixth in saves percentage with .470.
 
Lions in the Playoffs: Albright has made the playoffs every year since 2015, excluding the shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19. The Lions advanced to the semi-finals in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Their last playoff game was in 2019 when they were defeated by the No.5 seed Widener 14-10 at Shirk Stadium in the opening round.
 
Scouting the Pride: Widener ranks fifth, just one place above Albright, in both goals (11.91) and points (17.45) per game. They also rank fourth in assists per game with 5.55 and seventh in shot percentage with .452. Junior Gab Cohen leads the team in goals with 29 goals on the season and ranks sixth in the MAC Commonwealth with 2.64 per game. Senior Emma DiGilio is the spark for the Pride's offense, leading the team in points with 42 on 16 goals and 26 assists. DiGilio ranks fourth in the conference with 2.36 assists per game and sixth in points per game with 3.82. Sophomore defender Kaely Cristello leads the team and ranks second in the conference in caused turnovers per game with 1.73 and 19 on the season. Junior goalkeeper Maddie Medve ranks eighth in the conference in goals against average with 11.6 and seventh in saves percentage with .438.
 
The Pride in the Playoffs: Widener is making their second appearance in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament since the 2013 season. Their last playoff appearance was in 2019 which featured a 14-10 win over the No. 4 seed Albright at Shirk Stadium. They were defeated 10-5 in the semifinal round that year by the No. 1 seed Stevenson.
 
Series: The Lions lead the series with a 7-3 record after defeating the Pride in their last meeting on April 14th. Albright is also 5-0 on Widener's home field. This is only the second postseason meeting between the two programs.
 
Last Meeting: Albright earned a hard-fought 10-9 win at Widener on April 14th. The Lions rallied from an early 4-1 deficit and tied the game up at 4 going into the second half. The two teams traded goals during the duration of the game but back-to-back Albright goals from first-year Kayte Moist and junior Ashleigh Totorice would solidify their 10-9 victory over Widener. The Lions saw goals from eight different players on the evening and Taylor had a game-high eight draw controls. With the win, Mason matched the program record for career goalkeeper wins with 33.
 
Head Coaches: Jen Willis has posted an 86-72 record in 10 seasons as the head coach of Albright since the program debuted in 2012. This is her sixth straight MAC Commonwealth Tournament appearance for the Lions, excluding the shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19.
 
Kate Iorfino is in her fifth season as the head coach of Widener. She holds a 26-41 overall record with the Pride and led them into their first MAC Commonwealth Tournament appearance since 2013 in the 2019 season.
 
Up Next: The winner will advance to the semifinals of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament on Thursday, April 29th, and will face either the No. 2 York or the No. 7 seed Hood.
