Women’s Soccer Uses Strong First Half to Down Penn State Schuylkill in the Season Opener

The 2026 women’s soccer season officially got underway on Tuesday (Sept. 1) afternoon against Penn State Schuylkill downing the Nittany Lions 6-0.

SCHUYLKILL, Pa. – Women's soccer (1-0) started their 2026 season on a high note scoring three goals in each half to power themselves past Penn State Schuylkill (0-1) on the road. The Lions scored twice within the first five minutes of the contest and never looked back.

Gabby Verdone wasted no time introducing herself to the collegiate stage. In her first career game and start, Verdone stole the ball in the Nittany Lions defensive zone then proceeded to beat a defender on her way to putting the Lions up 1-0. The goal came just one minute and nine seconds into the contest.

Albright was not done in the first half as Anna Hogue-Pellerin notched her first career goal two minutes after Verdone. Hogue-Pellerin doubled the Lions lead off an assist from Jaylin Sheffield slotting a ball into the left corner of the net leaving the goalkeeper with little chance at a save.

After the Lions had a foul call go their way the ball eventually made its way to Alivia Neider who played a beautiful ball past the Nittany Lions backline which found a streaking Brylie Jensen. Jensen was able to do the rest to put Albright up 3-0. Jensen led the team in goals last season.

After 45 minutes of play the Lions were in complete control of the match, dominating both sides of the ball.

Hogue-Pellerin scored her first and second career goals of the season today with the second coming in the early goings of the second half.

Samantha Rosenberg notched her first career goal marking the third Lion of the afternoon to score for the first time in their careers. Rosenberg's goal came in the 54th minute of the game and was assisted by Verdone.

With the game well in hand, Jensen tallied her second of the afternoon to send the Lions off with a season opening win.

Albright scored six goals for the first time in a game since the 2026 ECAC semifinals against Neumann.

In her first career game Olivia Reinhart made five saves to keep a clean sheet in her collegiate debut.

In total, the Lions outshot the opposition 23-8, placing 16 shots of them on goal.
