ANNVILLE, Pa. - On Tuesday, the Middle Atlantic Conference announced that a program best 10 Lions have been recognized as First and Second Team All-Conference selections respectively. Headlining this year's all-conference honorees was the announcement that senior quarterback
Tanner Kelly has been named the Offensive Player of the Year.
Kelly, who was also named a first team selection, has had a sensational senior campaign with the red and white. A conference leader in multiple categories, Kelly has totaled 2,361 passing yards this fall and has a passing efficiency of 167.97 which ranks him in the top-10 in the nation. Of his 260 pass attempts, Kelly has completed 183 while only surrendering two interceptions. He has thrown for 18 touchdowns, and has averaged over 236 yards per game in the air. On the ground, Kelly has rushed for an additional 377 yards, six touchdowns, and has averaged 37.7 rushing yards per game.
Joining Kelly as a first team offense selection was senior wideout
Nate Romig. The all-time point's leader at Albright, Romig has recorded 901 receiving yards this season. To date Romig has totaled nine touchdowns and is averaging 90.1 receiving yards per game. In the double overtime win over Lebanon Valley, Romig accounted for two of the Lions five touchdowns and is now just one touchdown reception away from tying the all-time record at Albright of 36.
Junior kicker
John Whelan was also a first team selection alongside Romig and Kelly. One of the conference's best place kickers, Whelan continues to climb the record books at Albright. So far this season, the New Jersey native has totaled 3,097 yards on kickoffs and is currently 8-for-11 on field goal attempts. His longest field goal to date was marked at 43 yards in the week two win over Western Connecticut State University.
Making the switch to the defense, the Lions earned a total of two first team selections in
Bob Harper and
Brett Gaul. The first team honors were a first in the illustrious careers of both players. With 46 tackles on the year Harper has been one of the team's top linebackers totaling 10.5 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks and two interceptions.
When it comes to interceptions, Gaul has shined in 2009. Currently leading the team with four INT's, Gaul has also taken credit for five blocked kicks and has broken up six passes as well. He currently carries 37.5 tackles with him this season and has recorded two tackles for a loss.
Earning Second Team All-Conference honors for the first time in their careers were offensive linemen
Adam Burkart and
Matt Odenwalt. Throughout the season, the two have played a major part in guarding Albright's quarterbacks. They have also paved the way for the Lions 9-1 season and this weekend's trip to the NCAA tournament.
Another first time all-conference selection for the Lions is senior defensive lineman
Jack Sayer. One of Albright's most dominating players in the MAC, Sayer has used his 6'2”, 295 pound frame to man handle the opposition all season long. To date, Sayer has totaled 13.5 tackles, four of which were for a loss, two sacks, and has broken up two pass attempts.
Sophomore sacking machine
Alvin Thomas also earned his first all-conference selection Tuesday afternoon. With a team best 10 sacks this season, Thomas has been ranked in the top-10 in the nation and has led the conference since week one. His 11.5 tackles for a loss and two force fumbles both lead the Lions defense.
The final player to find a spot on the second team is senior defensive back
Dave Harig. After setting a program record for most solo tackles in a game, it only seems fitting that Harig finds his name on this seasons all-conference team. Currently leading the Lions with 53.5 tackles, Harig posted 17 solo stops in last Saturday's double overtime win over Lebanon Valley College. He eventually earned a career best 19 tackles in the contest and prevented the Dutchmen's 2-point conversion in the second overtime period to give Albright the victory.
Albright will return to action this Saturday in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Lions will face off against the Saxons of Alfred University in Alfred, NY with kickoff scheduled for noon.
