WBball Last Second Efforts Fall Short Against Lycoming

Box Score

READING, Pa. - Looking for their first conference win of the season, the Lady Lions (4-8/0-3 Commonwealth) hosted Lycoming College (3-10/1-2 Commonwealth) in a Commonwealth Conference showdown. Led by Kaitlyn Ober's game high 19 points, the Warriors downed Albright by the final score of 61-60 Saturday afternoon in the Bollman Center.

Ober's game high performance was fueled by 9-of-16 showing from the field with the addition of one free throw. She also tied the game high seven rebounds as well and totaled two assists and two steals.  Tying Ober's seven boards was Albright's own Rose Williamson, who also contributed six points.

Albright's Rory Yerkes led the afternoon for the red and white with 14 points. The junior guard was 5-for-13 from the field and 4-for-10 from three point range. She also dished out a team high five assists along with Jessica McGinness. Jenny Knoebel came off the bench for the Lady Lions and finished second on the team in scoring with 10 points in 26 minutes of action.

Through the first six minutes of Saturday's contest Albright and Lycoming were locked in a back and forth battle. However with a very quick seven point run the Warriors jumped out to a 17-10 lead. They would hold onto that seven point lead for most of the first half, until Albright posted their first real comeback of the day with solid free throw shooting by Kari Ludy and Amanda Medoro.

Both Medor and Ludy contributed late field goals as well to cut Lycoming's lead down to four with less than three minutes to play. Lycoming closed out the opening half on a Renee Freeden lay-up to take a 38-32 lead into the locker room.

After the break, the close match-up which had started Saturday's contest continued as Albright managed to tie Warrior's lead twice in the 15th minute. The Lions never allowed the Warriors to gain any more than a seven point lead, which they quickly cut down to one in the later part of the half.

With back-to-back free throws from Knoebel, Albright took its first and only lead of the second half with 1:30 left to play. Senior Jalene Warker then made it a two point game on her 1-for-2 shooting from the line.

Despite the late resurgence, all of Albright's momentum was stopped dead by the game winning three point basket by Lycoming's Alicia Engler.

The senior closed out the contest with only six points, all of which were scored from three point land. Looking to score the last second game winner, Albright brought the ball up the court, but was unable to hold on to it with just three seconds on the clock.

However with great a defensive play by Gina Zantopoulos Albright got the ball back one last time. Unfortunately there was only .02 seconds left when the red and white regained possession. In a last effort, the Lady Lions got the ball to Yerkes who heaved the ball over her head just missing the basket as time expired.

Women's Basketball returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Widener University for a 6 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game.
