Football Ends Season with 28-13 Loss at Lebanon Valley

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Lions 2010 season came to a tough end Saturday afternoon at Arnold Field, as the red and white were defeated by conference rival Lebanon Valley College by the final score of 28-13. Albright ends the regular season with a 5-5 record overall, and a 3-4 record in the Middle Atlantic Conference. The Dutchmen improved to 6-4 overall, and 5-2 in the MAC and will now wait to see if they play in one of the ECAC Bowl games scheduled for next Saturday.

Going into Saturday's match-up the Lions were plagued by injury as nearly 10 of their normal starters were out. On the day, Albright totaled 281 yards of offense on 52 total plays. Defensively, they recorded a game-high 72 tackles while forcing and recovering one fumble.

For the Dutchmen, their fifth consecutive win was secured by killing the clock as they maintained possession for over 34 minutes. They also managed 331 yards of total offense on 70 plays and were 9 of 15 on third-down conversions and 2 of 3 on fourth down conversions.

Proving to be the deciding factor for the Dutchmen was their run game, which compiled 194 total yards. The conference's leading rusher Ben Guiles tallied 142 total yards in Saturday's match-up and counted for two touchdowns. Quarterback Caleb Fick threw for 137 yards and one touchdown on 15-for-24 passing.

Leading the Lions on Saturday was freshman quarterback TJ Luddy. Coming off an impressive showing last week, Luddy threw all but one pass. On the day, he was 14-for-20 with 176 total yards and one touchdown. Scoring the Lions only TD reception was Sean Caldwell Jr. late in the fourth quarter. Caldwell led the game in receiving yards with 80, while senior Luke Wallace totaled 49 yards on three catches.

Albright's run game was also fueled by Luddy who ran for 54 total yards. Junior tailback Josan Holmes recorded 31 yards in Saturday's contest, and Albright's first touchdown. Holmes ends his 2010 season with a career-high 16 rushing touchdowns. He also totaled 823 rushing yards, and 1,263 all-purpose yards.

The Lions defense was led by PJ Green who recorded a career-best 11 stops. Behind him were Richie Applegate with nine tackles, and Drew Peterson with eight. Rob Mancinelli recorded Albright's only tackle for a loss and Eddie Mitchem forced and recovered the only Dutchmen fumble.

Saturday's game got off to a very rough start for the Lions as they turned the ball over on their very first pass attempt. The Dutchmen did now waste the opportunity as they scored their quarters first and only touchdown. Fick connected with Brendan Riley for a four-yard TD to make it 7-0 with 8:13 on the clock.

Albright's first score of the day did not come until 6:39 in the second quarter. Holmes managed to break through the Dutchmen defense for a one-yard TD. A blocked PAT would keep the score at 7-6 in favor of LVC.

In the second half, the Dutchmen put up back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter to jump out to a 21-6 lead. They then extended that lead to 28-6 in the fourth. Albright's final touchdown came with less than six minutes to play, when Luddy connected with Caldwell on a seven-yard touchdown pass.

Football will lose 15 players to graduation, but will return a solid core of players for their 2011 season. The Lions 2011 campaign is tentatively set to kickoff on September 3 when the red and white travel to Ursinus College.
