READING, Pa. - It was a great night for the Lady Lions all-around as they not only picked up a 66-54 win over Arcadia University, but they were able to support Breast Cancer Research as part of the Kay Yow/WBCA Pink Zone initiative. However it was junior
Jessica McGinness who truly stole the show Thursday evening in the Bollman Center as she became the 13th player in program history to score her 1,000th career point.
Thursday's win improves the Lady Lions record to 8-13, 4-7 in the conference. Arcadia fell to 5-16 overall, 0-11 in conference play.
McGinness, who needed just 14 points going into Thursday, closed out the conference match-up with a game-high 21 points. The junior was solid from the field making 6 of her 13 attempts, which included one three-pointer that put her over the 1,000 point plateau in the second half. At the line the Norristown native was 8-for-16, and nearly finished with a double-double totaling nine rebounds on the night.
With Thursday's performance, McGinness now stands at 1,007 career points at Albright, and is the fifth player under head coach
Janice Luck to reach the mark. Last season two members of the Lady Lions added their names to this prestigious club in Bre Dillon '09 and Annie McMahon '09.
Also playing a major part in the much needed conference win was
Mallory Olsheski, who totaled 10 rebounds and eight points.
Gina Zantopoulos,
Becca Pollack, and
MariLynn McMonagle each tallied seven points to add to the Lady Lions cause.
The Knights had three players finish in double-figures in scoring with Jackie Law recording the games only double-double. The freshman closed out the night with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Angie Adams finished second on the team in scoring with 13 points, followed by Corrine Geiger who recorded 12.
From the field, Albright shot an impressive 43.4%, while limiting Arcadia to just 31% shooting. Behind the arc both teams shot 14%, and at the charity strip Albright held a slim advantage shooting 66% as compared to Arcadia's 63%.
Thursday's contest got off to a very slow start for the red and white as the visiting Knights scored 11 unanswered points through the first five minutes of play. Albright's first basket of the night did not fall through the hoop until the 14:29 mark on a Pollack lay-up.
From there Albright chipped away at the Knights lead eventually taking their first lead of the night with less than a minute to play in the half.
After the intermission, Albright controlled the momentum of the second half from start to finish. The Lady Lions held a slim lead over Arcadia throughout the final 20 minutes. However with less than five minutes to play, Albright jumped out to their largest lead of the night on lay-up by McGinness (56-49).
They would then close out the night at the free throw line, which helped them secure the 66-54 win.
Women's Basketball returns to action this Saturday when they travel to Lebanon Valley College for a 2 p.m. Commonwealth Conference match-up.
