Box Score
READING, Pa. - With only five seconds left on the clock and with Albright ahead by one Widener inbounded the ball to Bobby Edmunds who then dribbled the ball through traffic and at the very last second put up the game-winning jumper to push the Pride of Widener University (11-9/4-5 CC) past the first place Lions (16-3/7-2 CC) by the final score of 49-48 Wednesday evening in the Bollman Center.
In front of a wild Albright crowd, Edmunds who finished the night with only five points, managed to get his shot off right before time expired. The ball would then hit nothing but net as the entire Pride bench cleared the floor to celebrate the upset win over the host Lions.
From start to finish the Lions and the Pride exchanged control of the lead a total of seven times, while also tying the score an additional seven more times. Albright coming off a huge win on Saturday tried to keep that momentum alive, and looked as if though they were going to walk away with the game in the opening minutes of the contest.
Led by
Zac Shaeffer who recorded 13 of the Lions first 15 points, Albright jumped out to an 11 point lead before anyone knew what happened. However the early hot streak by the Lions quickly went cold, which allowed the Pride to come roaring back.
Albright would go over five minutes before they recorded another basket, following a lay-up by
Shane Irwin. This long scoreless period gave Widener the opportunity to tie the game at 19-19 with about 5:30 left to play in the half.
Despite the let down, Albright did regain some life and managed to pull out a five point lead going into the locker room. The final 20 minutes saw a much tamer Albright team, again giving the Pride another huge window to take control of the contest.
With another late run, Widener jumped out to a four point lead with less than three minutes to play. However a Shaeffer three-point basket and back-to-back free throws by
Derek Hall, gave the Lions a slim one point advantage.
Unfortunately, those efforts were quickly silenced by an Onyi Ezeala lay-up to give Widener their own one point lead. On Albright's next possession and with only eight seconds on the clock Shaeffer was fouled and went to the foul line.
The junior made both free throws to give Albright that slim advantage again. Widener would then pull off the impossible as Edmunds would get the ball in his hands with five seconds left to play. He would then dribble the ball from the far side of the court and in the final second of play put up the game-winner right in front of his own team's bench.
A stunned Albright team could only wonder what happened as the entire Widener team cleared the bench in celebration.
Even with the tough loss, the Lions did see some sensational play from Shaeffer who ended the night with a game-high 24 points. Hall used his 6'11” frame to pull down a career best 16 rebounds.
As a team, the Lions totaled nine more rebounds than their opponent (45-38), and shot 28% from behind the arc (7-25) and 78% from the line (11-14). Proving to be the biggest downfall for Albright was their 28% shooting from the field and 22 turnovers.
Widener was led by the duo of Jarrell Nelson and Jack Brennan who each totaled 10 points on the night. The Pride ended the night shooting 32% from the floor and 55% from the line. Behind the arc Widener was 1-for-10 as a team.
Men's Basketball returns to action this Saturday when they travel to Elizabethtown College for a 4 p.m. conference showdown.
