READING, Pa. - It was a tough afternoon for the Lady Lions (6-10/1-3 CC) as they made their 2010 home debut against the Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley (14-4/4-0 CC). In game one the two teams battled it out into extra innings, before LVC was able to take a 4-2 win in the ninth, while in game two the Dutchmen shutout the Lady Lions 11-0 in five innings of play to sweep the conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Albright Softball Field.
Prior to the start of Saturday's contest, the red and white and their fans took a moment to honor senior shortstop
Kelli Zimmerman for setting both the all-time single game and career stolen bases record at Albright College.
In game, the Lady Lions managed to overcome a 2-0 deficit to event the score at 2-2 in the bottom half of the sixth inning. After a scoreless seventh and eighth innings, the Dutchmen got a break when Meghan Donoghue went yard on a two run shot to left field, making it 4-2 in favor of the visitors.
Prior to Donoghue's go ahead homer in the ninth, both of Lebanon Valley's two runs were scored on home runs, the first by Katie Freeman and the second by Allie Davies.
Albright's two runs did not come from the long ball, but clutch hitting and smart base running. After falling into a two out hole to start the inning, freshman
Brandy Lagomarsino recorded a ground rule double to move immediately into scoring position.
She would then advance to third on a single by
Jaime Weckesser, and then quickly moved to home after the Dutchmen center fielder bobbled the ball in the outfield.
With a runner on first,
Becky Crandall stepped up to the plate, and on the very first pitch crushed the ball to right field scoring Weckesser. Looking to stretch her hit to a triple, Crandall turned the corner towards third base, but with a heads-up play by Lebanon Valley was picked off at third which ended the inning.
Overall, the Lady Lions posted seven hits in game one of the doubleheader, with Weckesser going all nine innings in the circle. The righty pitcher retired a career best eight batters in her extended appearance, and allowed just fives hits on the day.
Her Dutchmen counterpart, Val Malizzia also went the entire game, and retired 10 Albright batters.
Moving into game two of the doubleheader, Albright looked to keep the momentum alive and possibly upset the tough Dutchmen. Unfortunately that did not happen, as Lebanon Valley tallied nine runs in the fourth inning to blow the game open.
Prior to that very tough inning, Albright trailed LVC by just two runs, with
Dana Parolari pitching extremely well in the circle for her team. However, it was Lebanon Valley's ace Laura Snyder who stole the show, allowing just one hit all afternoon. Through the first four innings, Snyder was perfect, but with a minor letdown in the fifth she surrendered a walk and single.
Softball returns to action on Thursday, when they host Moravian College in a non-conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
