Elizabethtown Sweeps Softball in Conference Action

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Led by freshman infielder Elly McCarthy's four hits, five RBI, and three runs scored, the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College (12-7-1/4-4 CC) were able to pull off a two game conference sweep of the Lady Lions (6-17/1-7 CC) by the final scores of 6-5 and 9-1 Saturday afternoon at The Nest.

In game one McCarthy was solid at the plate going 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. For Albright, Nikki Schwenk matched McCarthy's performance going 3-for-3 with three RBI of her own. Ally Martin also recorded multiple hits in the opener going 2-for-2 with a run scored.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Lady Lions quickly found themselves in a two-run hole after giving up three runs in the bottom half of the opening frame. However that did not phase the red and white as they evened the score at 3-3 in the third on an RBI triple by Kelli Zimmerman, and an RBI single by Schwenk.  Also going deep in the opener was Brandy Lagomarsino, who recorded her first triple of the year to lead off the contest.

Unfortunately, the Blue Jays responded right back in the bottom of that same inning with another three runs to take a 6-3 lead. Down once again, but definitely not out, the Lady Lions began to chip away at Etown's three-run lead. They quickly put up a run in the fifth to make it a two-run, and then closed the gap even more in the seventh on an RBI single by Schwenk.

Despite their best attempts Albright was unable to get the tying run across the plate, as the Blue Jays held on to steal the game one victory.

In the circle, Etown's Julie Sebastian picked up her seventh win of the year, while Dana Parolari was handed the loss for the Lady Lions.

Moving into the nightcap, the two teams were once again even through the first three innings of play. Deadlocked at 1-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, Albright looked to keep up the solid defensive play that had silence Etown for most of the afternoon.

However the Blue Jays had other ideas, and before Albright knew what happened Etown jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Of the seven runs scored in the inning, only three were earned.

Sealing the game two win for the Blue Jays was McCarthy who homered in the sixth to make it 9-1.

For Elizabethtown, Emily Vogel recorded her fifth win of the season after allowing the one run on five hits through six complete innings of work. Jaime Weckesser was handed the game two loss after giving up eight runs on eight hits through the first five innings.

Softball will return to action next Saturday when they host Messiah College at 1 p.m. on the Albright Softball Field. Wednesday's game against Dickinson College has been postponed and a make-up date has not yet been confirmed.
