DII Kutztown Rips Through Baseball

READING, Pa. – In their annual meeting at minor league ball park First Energy Stadium, the Lions faced-off against Division II member Kutztown University in a special non-conference match-up. The Golden Bears who are currently ranked in the top-10 in Division II downed the Lions by the final score of 18-4 Monday evening.

Through the first three innings the Lions had their hands full with the Golden Bears as Kutztown put up 13 runs to jump out to a 13-1 lead. Scoring Albright's first run of the evening was Jon Raymond on an RBI single by senior outfielder Mike Nolan.

After the three tough innings, the Lions settled down and held the Golden Bears to five more runs, while scoring one of their own. Driving in the Lions second run of the day for Albright was senior Casey Lawrence on a RBI fielder's choice. Touching home plate for the red and white was junior Rob Macinelli who led off the fifth inning with a single.

After giving up five more runs through the final six innings, Albright stepped up to the plate in the ninth. Even though they trailed the Golden Bears Jojo Fischer, Matt Pannella, and Shawn Walbert each recorded big hits to score two more runs to make it 18-4.

Fischer and Walbert both recorded doubles in the final frame, while Pannella picked up his first triple of the season, which drove in Albright's fourth run of the night.

Albright closed out the night with a total of six hits, while the Golden Bears who entered the contest batting .331 on the year as a team totaled 28 hits.

Senior Shane Stein was handed the loss on the hill for the red and white, while Brandon Shurr picked up his second win of the year.

Baseball returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Drew University in a non-conference game scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Kelchner Field.
