Softball Splits with Lycoming in Conference Doubleheader

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – In their final road conference match, the Lady Lions (7-24/2-10 CC) split with the Warriors of Lycoming College in two extremely close contests. In game one the red and white dropped a 2-1 nine inning decision, but managed to bounce back in game two to earn a 6-4 conference victory Saturday afternoon at Shangraw Complex.

Pacing Albright to the game-two victory was the 3-for-4 performances by Kelli Zimmerman, Brandy Lagomarsino, and Kiersten Gilfoy. Combined the Lady Lions recorded a total of 15 hits in the victory, while in the circle sophomore pitcher Jaime Weckesser picked up the win after allowing just one hit through the final three innings.

Game two got off to a great start for Albright as they put up three-runs on the scoreboard. Lycoming did manage two runs of their own in the bottom half of the opening frame. In the second and fourth innings, both teams scored a single run to keep the game close. However it was Albright's lone run in the fifth that proved to be the deciding factor.

Scoring the final run of the afternoon for Albright was Gloria Alfonsi, who actually recorded a double in the inning. From there, Alfonsi advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a wild pitch to give her team the crucial insurance run.

In the opener, the Lady Lions recorded just five hits, as compared to Lycoming's 11 in the tough nine inning loss. After scoring the go-ahead run in the first inning, the Lady Lions, led by Weckesser kept the host Warriors off the scoreboard until the bottom half of the seventh.

After tying the game at 1-1, the two teams headed into extra innings. Scoring the game winning run in the ninth for Lycoming was Tierra Miller on an RBI single by Amy Cline.

Despite the loss, Weckesser was solid throughout the extra inning battle as she retired a total of eight batters in her nine innings of work.

At the plate Alfonsi was credited with the lone Albright RBI, while Nikki Schwenk scored the run.

Softball returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host Dickinson College on the Albright Softball field. Prior to the start of the contest, the Lady Lions will recognize seniors Zimmerman and Alfonsi.
