READING, Pa. - In their final game of the 2010 season Kelchner Field, the host Lions (9-25/5-12 CC) were defeated by the Pride of Widener University (19-10/12-4 CC) by the final score of 6-1 in a Commonwealth Conference match-up Friday afternoon.
Prior to the start of Friday's contest the Lions recognized theirs six senior members who are playing in their final conference series this weekend. Making up the class of 2010 are
Casey Lawrence,
Mike Nolan,
Matt Kozlowski,
Shane Stein,
Joe Clark, and
Kevin Butler.
Leading the Pride to the conference victory was second baseman Alex Oliver who went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with two doubles, one triple, two RBI, and a run scored. On the hill Rick Kazigian was solid through seven innings allowing just one run, unearned, on six hits. The righty also retired six batters and walked four others.
For the Lions, both Kozlowski and Tommy Canuso walked away with a pair of hits. Kozlowski recorded a double to lead off the bottom of the ninth in his final at-bat on Kelchner Field. Scoring Albright's only run of the afternoon was Butler, who took advantage of a throwing error by Oliver in the bottom half of the seventh.
Going all nine innings on the mound was Lawrence, who retired 10 batters, while only walking one. On the day, the six Widener runs, five of which were earned, were scored on 12 hits.
After back-to-back scoreless innings to start off Friday's contest, Widener put the first dent on the scoreboard in the top half of the third. The Pride, who have earned a place in this year's Commonwealth Conference tournament scored a total of three runs in the third frame. They then added two more runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth to secure the win.
Baseball will close out their 2010 season tomorrow afternoon at Widener University in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start.
