READING, Pa. – It was a very tough afternoon for the Lady Lions as they traveled up the road to take on cross town conference rival Alvernia University. After dropping a 3-1 game one decision, the two teams battled it out in the nightcap, but unfortunately the host Crusaders managed to pull out a 6-5 win in the bottom of the seventh to sweep Albright Tuesday afternoon at Angelica Park.
In the opener, Alvernia put up one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to initially take a 3-0 lead. Looking rally the seventh, the red and white scored their first run of the contest, but were unable to add any additional runs, giving the Crusaders their fifth straight victory.

Kelli Zimmerman was one of four Lady Lions to record a hit in the game one loss, while sophomore pitcher
Jaime Weckesser went all six innings in the circle. On the day, Weckesser tallied five strikeouts while allowing the three runs on eight hits.
Moving into game two, the Lady Lions despite trailing 1-0 after the second inning, put up three runs in the top of the third to take their first lead of the day. Alvernia then tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning.
After two scoreless innings, Albright retook the lead on an RBI double by
Alex Tragno. Down but not out, Alvernia jumped out to 5-4 lead in the bottom half of the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles. Both runs scored in the inning were unearned.
In the seventh, the Lady Lions tied the score at 5-5 after Weckesser drove in
Kiersten Gilfoy on an RBI double with only one out on the scoreboard. Alvernia eventually got out of the inning without giving up another run.
Now in the bottom half of the seventh, Alvernia started the inning off with a single. From there the base runner stole second, and then advanced to third on a groundout to the shortstop. The Crusaders clinched the win on an RBI single that managed to get past the Lady Lions defense.
Going all 6 1/3 innings in the circle for Albright was
Allie Frank. The freshman righty surrendered the six runs, only three of which were earned, on nine hits. She also managed to fan two batters, and walked just on Crusader.
At the plate Weckesser's double was one of seven Albright hits recorded in the contest. Weckesser along with Tragno each recorded an RBI.
Softball returns to action this Thursday when they travel to Franklin and Marshall College for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
