Box Score
Albright overcame a sloppy shooting performance and
Derek Hall and
Reuel Moore scored 14 points apiece as the Lions defeated Lancaster Bible College 78-57 in a non-conference game Saturday.
The senior Hall scored the game's first two points via free throws as Albright opened the game on a 10-2 run. But foul shooting proved to be the difference in first half as both teams shot under 36% from the field in the opening half. Albright bested Lancaster Bible from the free throw line as they shot an impressive 75% to just 44.4% for the Chargers.
A superior defensive effort was also key for the Lions as they tallied nine steals and four blocks in the opening 20 minutes, holding the Chargers to just seven fast-break points.
With 13:20 left in the first half, sophomore
Kyle Jordan drained a 3-pointer from 22 feet out to give Albright a 15-4 lead. Jordan scored again on the next possession, and the Chargers responded with a 11-2 run over the next six minutes to cut Albright's lead to 17-15.
Albright reversed the momentum around with a 10-3 run of its own, highlighted by a
Sam Marrella steal and
Pedro Perez layup that made it 21-15 en route to a 27-18 lead after junior
Tom Paul's missile from three-point land.
Marrella finished the contest with a team-high six steals, including five in the first half.
Lancaster Bible's
Madison Warfel drained a three-pointer off the fast break to trim the Albright lead to 29-24 with 2:34 left in the half.
The Chargers' foul line troubles hindered their opportunities to keep the score closer in the first half as they put Albright in the bonus with more than 14 minutes left. The Lions led 35-26 going into the locker room.
The second half offered more of the same lackluster play, as the Lions had trouble making shots. Albright's lead fluctuated between seven and 10 points throughout the first 12 minutes of the second half.
After LBC's
Erich Graybill (six points, team-high seven rebounds) cut the Albright lead to 56-49 with 7:20 left, the Lions appeared to be on their heels yet again.
But the Chargers failure to maintain the momentum as
Darrell Epps, LBC's team leader in scoring at 11.3 PPG entering the game, turned the ball over on two consecutive possessions, fueling the decisive run.The Red and White defense neutralized the talented Epps on the whole as he recorded just nine points and committed a game-high 10 turnovers.
The opening play of Albright's surge came from none other than the game's scoring leaders, as Hall stole the ball from Epps, and then passed the ball to the sophomore Moore for a layup on the fast break to make it 58-49. Those two points began a 22-8 run most of the 525 fans in attendance were waiting for as Albright cruised to its second straight victory.
Hall led the Lions with 12 rebounds, including a game-high nine defensive boards.
Albright continues its season Dec. 18 when they travel across the county to face Penn State Berks at 3 p.m. The men's team returns to the Bollman Center for the final time in 2011 when they host the Albright Holiday tournament, Dec. 29-30.
