The Lions were unable to handle a vicious Widener trap and fast break combination as the Albright College women's basketball team fell 77-49, Saturday in Chester, Pa.
Freshmen
Jessica Venturelli and Tara Sabotchik each had 12 points in the loss. Sophomore
Meghan Boyle had eight points a team-high seven rebounds.
Widener came out pressing and jumped to a quick 8-0 lead, forcing Albright to call a pair of timeouts within three minutes. Boyle got the Lions on the board with a basket, 3:07 into the game.
Joanna Persiano's lay-in on the break made it 14-4, just over five minutes into the action. The lead was 16-4 when
Jenny Knoebel answered with a hard drive into the lane to finish with a floater.
Albright committed the first eight turnovers of the contest, before finally forcing giveaways on consecutive possessions. The Lions couldn't get a run going however, as they turned the ball over again, leading to two free throws by
Lindsay Pepino and a 20-8 Widener lead.
Down 23-8 with under eight minutes remaining in the first half, Venturelli managed to beat the shot clock buzzer with a nice bank shot from the right side. Widener's
Vanessa Hejnas answered immediately to restore the 15-point gap, but
Samantha Martin canned a three-pointer from the left corner on Albright's next possession.
Ally Ferrucci found Hejnas on the break to make it 29-13 Pride as the fast break onslaught continued. Albright's
Victoria Smith hit a nice step-back jumper but Persiano answered with a three to put the hosts ahead 33-15.
Celeste Golub hit one of two free throws with 29 seconds remaining as Widener took its biggest lead of the game up to that point into the break, 38-17.
Things didn't change after halftime as Albright threw the opening inbounds pass away and the Pride had themselves another point just five seconds in on Hejnas' free throw.
Boyle got the Lions on the board in the second half with a nice drop-step move for two, but yet again the Pride answered quickly with a long two, preventing Albright from getting any sort of momentum going.

Lil Carney to finish a three-point play and put the Pride ahead 52-21, with 15:48 to play.
Sabotchick made a three-pointer midway through the second half that spun off the rim, hit the backboard, and went around the rim again before finally dropping through. She also had a three-point play late in the game.
Hejnas led Widener with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting.
Kate Dellinger had 15 points, and Ferrucci added a game-high seven assists.
Albright falls to 2-5, 0-2 and will host Cabrini on Wednesday.
