With a timely run midway through the second half and a double-double effort from
Meghan Boyle, the Albright College women's basketball team (3-5) was able to pull away and hold on for a 63-57 victory over the visiting Cabrini Cavaliers (4-3), Wednesday evening in non-conference action in the Bollman Center.
Boyle finished the evening with 10 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks while shooting 5-for-10 from the field.
After neither side could pull away in the first few minutes of the second half,
Jenny Knoebel gave Albright their largest lead of the game up to that point, 41-35. Her three-point shot off of a nice feed from
Amanda Tiritilli in transition came with 15:50 left, forcing Cabrini to call timeout.
The Lions kept pushing and a jumper from Tiritilli on their next possession extended the lead to eight.
Jessica Venturelli then gave Albright their first double-digit lead with just over 12 minutes to play when another successful shot from behind the arc provided a 47-37 advantage.
Albright pushed the lead to 13 on a short jumper from
Shawn Barczynski with 5:07 on the clock.
With an effective press, Cabrini cut the lead to seven with a minute and a half left, but Albright hit its free throws down the stretch to take the victory.
Down 6-0 early in the contest, the Lions got hot from behind the arc. Three-point shots from Tara Sabotchik and Venturelli tied up the score at the 14:38 mark.
Samantha Martin then dialed up two three pointers of her own. Her first gave Albright their first lead of the game at 9-8 with 13:05 to play. She connected once again halfway through the period to provide an 18-15 advantage.
With Albright holding a two-point lead, Cabrini's
Brittany Sandone went on a seven-point spurt in just over a minute to help the Cavaliers regain the lead at 22-20 with 7:32 to go. When the Cavaliers provided themselves with another six-point cushion a few minutes later, the Lions responded with a short run at the end of the half. With the clock winding down, Knoebel drove the lane and hit a runner at the buzzer to tie things up at 30-30 heading into the break.
Both teams shot an identical 12-for-28 in the first half of action. The Lions ended the contest shooting 21-for 54, while Cabrini finished 23-for-70. Both teams collected 43 rebounds.
Also finishing in double figures for the Lions were Venturelli and Barczynski. Venturelli used a 5-for-6 showing at the free throw line to collect a team-high 13 points to go with six rebounds. Barczynski ended the night with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Sabotchik provided a spark off the bench with 9 points and a team-high three assists.
Sandone finished with 13 points and five assists for the Cavaliers, and
Colleen Stewart shot 5-for-9 to finish in double figures with 11 points.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Moravian for a non-conference game, scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
