GRANTHAM, Pa. – Early turnovers and a strong defensive effort by the Falcons would be the difference maker as women's basketball (8-16/4-10 Commonwealth) was handed their final loss of the 2010-11 season with Messiah College (18-6/12-2 CC) earning a 72-33 conference decision Saturday afternoon at Brubaker Gymnasium.
From the tip, the Falcons controlled the momentum of Saturday's regular season finale. Currently the number two seed in the conference standings, the Falcons will host a conference semi-final game next Wednesday in Grantham.
Senior
MariLynn McMonagle led the Lady Lions in scoring with nine points on 4-of-15 shooting. On the glass senior
Rose Williamson ended her career with a game-high 12 boards. Messiah had three players finish in double-figures, with Dori Gyori and Kira Maier each scoring a game-high 14 points. After them was Nicky Hess who finished with 10 points.
As a team, the Falcons held Albright to just 26% shooting from the field, while their offense fired on all cylinders as they shot 53%. Albright made just one three to finish the day 1-for-9. Messiah shot 50% from behind the arc on their 5-of-10 shooting.
In the first half, Albright was held to a mere 11 points on 16% shooting. Messiah dominated the opening the 20 minutes scoring a combined 42 points. After the break a 30 point second half by the Falcons would secure their 39 point victory.
Saturday's contest marked the final game in the careers of McMonagle, Williamson,
Jessica McGinness,
Rory Yerkes, and
Dana Wilcomes.
