READING, Pa. – Trailing by 16 with just over 5 minutes to play, women's basketball mounted one of their most impressive comebacks of the year, cutting the Elizabethtown's comfortable lead down to just four in three short minutes. Unfortunately, a 6-3 run in the final minute would give the Blue Jays a 76-67 conference win Saturday afternoon in the Bollman Center.
The Lady Lions (6-14/2-8 Commonwealth), who had an extremely tough first half, clawed their way back in the second on the back of senior
Jessica McGinness. In the final 20 minutes of play, McGinness lead all players with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, and 2-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. The Norristown native ended the contest with a team-high 21 points.
Leading the Blue Jays (12-8/4-6 Commonwealth) was senior Megan Strohman who shot 50% from the field and from behind the arc. At the line she was a perfect 5-for-5 to fuel the Blue Jays fourth conference victory. Also posting double-figures in Saturday's contest was Kendra Beittel, who had 16 points off the bench. Ten of her 16 points were recorded at the free throw line as she went an impressive 10-for-12. Her only field goals were a pair of three's.
Both teams were almost identical from the field, with Albright shooting 37.3% and Elizabethtown 37.1%. From three point range, the Blue Jays were 8-for-29, while Albright was 4-for-17. At the line, Albright was 13-for-16, while Elizabethtown was 22-for-30.
The first six minutes of Saturday's match-up were back and forth, with the red and white scoring the opening basket on a
Rose Williamson jumper. Williamson recorded a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with her eight points.
Elizabethtown's Stephanie Ellwood evened the score with her first lay-up of the afternoon just moments later. Albright continued to shoot well from all areas of the floor, which they used to hold a small lead over the Blue Jays.
However at the 14 minute mark, the Lady Lions offense went ice cold. This freeze in production, opened a door for the Blue Jays, which they gladly walked through, scoring 17 unanswered points.
The next Albright points came from McGinness at the free throw line with 7:33 left in the half. Now firing on all cylinders, Elizabethtown continued to add to their comfortable lead, which grew to 22 points right before the half.
After the break, Elizabethtown maintained a near 20 point lead through the first 10 minutes of play, but all that changed at the midway point. Before anyone knew, the red and white began to build some steam. Even with another run by Elizabethtown, Albright never faltered as they continued to battle right back. A late 12-0 run would make a huge dent in the Blue Jays lead, but it was not enough to break through, as the Lady Lions just ran out of time.
Women's basketball returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Arcadia University for a 6 p.m. conference game.
