READING, Pa. – With a combined 28 hits respectively, the visiting Warriors of Lycoming College (8-2/2-0 Commonwealth) recorded a pair of conference wins over softball (6-10/0-4 Commonwealth) by the final scores of 11-1 and 9-7 Saturday afternoon at the Albright Softball Field.
Albright combined for 18 hits during the conference doubleheader. In the opener, Lycoming was solid start to finish as they put up 15 hits and 11 runs to earn their first conference win of the year. The Lions were held to just six hits, and managed their lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break-up the shutout.
The nightcap got off to a great start for the red and white as they jumped out a 3-1 lead after the first. Lycoming put up one more run in the top of the third, but it was a two-run bottom of the fourth for the Lions that kept them in control of the scoreboard. Unfortunately that all changed in the fifth, as the Warriors scored seven runs to jump out to a 9-5 lead.
Looking for a late rally, Albright was held scoreless in the fifth and sixth frames. In the bottom half of the ninth, the Lady Lions managed a pair of runs but were unable to drive in the much needed two to keep Saturday's game going.
Freshman outfielder
Brittany Bartok was solid at the plate for the Lions as she went 4-for-7 with three doubles and two runs scored respectively.
Jaime Weckesser picked-up two RBI in game two and went 2-for-7 on the afternoon.
Melanie Chapman,
Nikki Schwenk, and
Megan Keohane were also members of the two-hit club in game two, with all three hitters also earning a run.
In the circle, Weckesser (2-5) was handed the loss in game one after surrendering 11 runs, eight of which were earned, on 15 hits. She combined for six strikeouts and six walks.
Alex Tragno (3-4) went six complete innings in game two allowing nine runs, seven of which were earned, on 11 hits. She also went on to record four strikeouts and five walks.
For the Warriors, Holly Lansberry was dominant at the plate and in the circle in game one. While allowing only six hits in seven innings, Lansberry also managed to go 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Taylor Lesser combined for a 3-for-5 showing in the opener, and Janelle Poorman put-up three RBI on 2-of-4 hitting.
Amy Cline was the driving force in game two with her 5-for-5 showing, which resulted in one RBI and three runs scored. Lansberry was just as hot in the nightcap adding three more hits in her five at-bats while also accounting for a run as well.
Softball returns to action tomorrow when they host Ramapo College. Currently the game time is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, but that time could be pushed back depending on field conditions. Fans are asked the check back to AlbrightAthletics.com tomorrow morning for updates.
