Softball Splits Season Opener in Virginia Beach

vs. Averett Box Score

vs. John Jay Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – In their 2011 debut Albright softball (1-1) put together two solid performances as they faced off against Averett University (5-4) and John Jay College (0-1). In the opener, the red and white fell to Averett by the score of 3-1, while in the nightcap they recorded a 12-2 five inning victory.

Against Averett, the red and white combined for seven hits and nearly pulled out the win in the bottom half of the seventh. With bases loaded, the red and white were unable to get that clutch hit, as the Cougars managed to hang on to earn the win.

In game two, the Lady Lions jumped all over John Jay, as they combined for 12 runs on 12 hits. Before the second inning came to a close the red and white were sitting with a 5-0 lead. After John Jay tacked on their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth, the Lions offense cranked out seven runs to earn their first win.

Senior Melanie Chapman went 2-for-3 in both games and drove in one run, while also accounting for two of the Lions 12 runs in the nightcap. Having a solid showing at the plate, especially against John Jay was sophomore Nikki Schwenk who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a team leading three runs scored.

Jackie Bohanan made her college debut one to remember as she drove in three runs on two hits in game two. All-conference returnee Kiersten Gilfoy combined for three hits on the day, while also knocking in the lone Albright run against Averett.

Jaime Weckesser pitched a strong game against Averett. Through seven complete innings, Weckesser allowed just five hits. All three runs scored in the opener were unearned. Alex Tragno went all five innings in game two, and tallied six strikeouts.

Softball returns to action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. when they take on North Carolina Wesleyan. They will then close out their trip to Virginia Beach with a noon match-up against York College (NY).
