CARLISLE, Pa. – Led by an offensive surge that included 20 hits, the Dickinson College Red Devils (16-15) swept the Albright College Lady Lions (9-23) by the scores of 7-1 and 11-3 in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Dickinson Park.
In game one, Dickinson jumped on the board in the bottom of the first as Emma Murtaugh brought home the first run of the game with an RBI single down the rightfield line.
With a 2-0 lead, the Red Devils broke the game open in the home third. Murtaugh stole home to record the first run of the inning. Melissa Osborn then drove in another with an RBI single. The Red Devils continued to expand the lead with two more in the inning on a wild pitch and passed ball.
The Lady Lions would cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth.
Jackie Bohanan and
Hillary Rodriguez each smacked singles to create a first-and-third situation. After a fielder's choice,
Brittany Bartok advanced home on an illegal pitch with two outs to cut the lead to 6-1. However, the Lady Lions wouldn't get any closer as Dickinson added an insurance run in the sixth before walking away with the game one victory.
Liz Barry recorded the win for Dickinson in game one as she threw five innings while allowing six hits and one earned run. Allison Jordan then came in out of the bullpen to strike out all six batters she faced in her two innings in the circle.
Jaime Weckesser was handed the loss after allowing four earned runs in three innings.
Offensively, the Red Devils were paced by Murtaugh, who went 3-for-3 in the opener with three runs scored and one RBI. The Lady Lions received two hits apiece from
Brandy Lagomarsino and Bohanan.
In game two of the doubleheader, Dickinson came out hot offensively once again in the first. Alesha Sisco and Osborn provided the clutch hits in the inning. Sisco brought in the first two runs with an RBI double down the rightfield line, and Osborn drove in another to give Dickinson a 3-0 advantage.
Albright responded in the second inning when Rodriguez singled to drive in
Becky Crandall. Two innings later, the Lions tied things up. With runners on second and third, Rodriguez again came through with a single to center field to make it a 3-3 ballgame.
The Red Devils, however, ended all doubt of a split with a seven-run fourth inning. Dickinson used four hits, two walks and an error to take control of the contest. Osborn provided the key hit in the inning with a one-out double that brought in two.
Chelsea Homa got the win in game two after going six innings and allowing three runs. Albright's
Allie Frank was handed the loss.
Sisco and Osborn led Dickinson in game two with three RBIs each. Carly Jordan recorded three hits and two runs scored. Rodriguez brought in all three Albright runs with her two hits, and Crandall went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
