Softball Earns Hard Fought Split with Widener

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

CHESTER, Pa. – After picking-up their first conference win of the year with a 2-1 decision, softball (7-15/1-5 Commonwealth) nearly swept conference rival Widener University, but a bottom of the ninth RBI double by the home team would earn the Lady Lions their first conference split as Widener (13-9/4-2 CC) pulled out a 9-8 win in the nightcap Sunday afternoon at Widener University.

Forcing the extra two innings was a homer by Widener in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 8-8. Albright got game-two off to a great start as they scored three runs in the top half of the first. However, Widener answered right back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of that same inning to take the lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the red and white scored their fourth run of the afternoon on a Jaime Weckesser's home run, her second of the day. Weckesser went yard in game one to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. On the day, the junior pitcher/designated player went 4-for-7 with four RBI and four runs scored.

Once again, the Pride had answer for the Lady Lions as they scored two more runs in the bottom of the same inning to retake their lead. After another scoreless inning, the Albright bats came alive in a big-way as they scored four runs in the top of the fifth to jump out to a 8-6 lead.

Widener would only get one run in the bottom of the fifth, and with a scoreless sixth it looked as if the red and white were going to walk away with the sweep. Unfortunately that was not the case as the Pride got their biggest hit of the afternoon to tie the game at 8-8. A scoreless eighth and a 1-2-3 top of the ninth would give Widener a huge window of opportunity, which they took full advantage of.

The Pride would start the inning off with a double to right center. After a foul out to the catcher, Widener got what they were looking for in the form of a walk-off double to deep center field.

Also going deep in game two was Becky Crandall on her only hit of the nightcap, which drove in three-runs. In the opener, Crandall 2-for-3 to close out the afternoon 3-for-6 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.

In the circle, Weckesser was dominant in her first conference win of the year. Through seven innings, she allowed just two hits and the one run, which was unearned. She walked a total of five batters and struck out two.

Game two saw all three Albright pitchers make an appearance. Allie Frank started the contest, but had a tough first inning. Alex Tragno relieved her teammate and went 6 2/3 allowing four runs on 11 hits. Weckesser closed out the nightcap and was handed the loss after going 1 1/3.

Softball returns to action tomorrow when they host Misericordia University at 3 p.m. on the Albright Softball Field.
