Perez Three Wins 2OT Thriller at Arcadia

Box Score

Pedro Perez drained a three with 10.2 seconds remaining in double-overtime to keep the Lions' season alive as the Albright College men's basketball team rallied from a 13-point second half deficit to defeat Arcadia, 85-84 in Glenside, Pa.

Perez' winner from downtown canceled out Aaron Lee-Webb's tough step-back that had put Arcadia up 84-82 in the final minute of the second extra period.

Albright had trailed 82-78 after Khalief Trawick, a thorn in their side throughout crunch time, scored and was fouled. He missed the and-one however, as free throws would be Arcadia's un-doing on the evening.

Arcadia would make just three of their final 12 free throw attempts down the stretch, finishing the game at 46% from the line (11-of-24). Albright was actually worse, going 10-for-27 (37%).

All of Perez' 12 points came from behind the arc. Senior Derek Hall had a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds; also in double-figures were Dave Singleton (18 points) and Shane Irwin (11 points).

Joe Brown had opened the second overtime scoring with a tip-in, and Malcolm Still hit two free throws to make it 80-76 Arcadia. Singleton dropped an open jumper before Trawick's basket set up Albright's dramatic comeback.

Cornell Mickens scored right off the tip in the first overtime, but the Lions had to fight back also in that period. Another set of Still free throws was matched by Singleton's basket. Trawick then put Arcadia up 76-74 but Hall tied it with 6.6 seconds left to send things to a second extra period.

Albright was fortunate as Arcadia missed its last seven free throws down the stretch in regulation. Down 64-60 with 3:04, Irwin found Hall with a nice pass to halve the deficit.

Neither side could deliver the finishing blow, as Rashon Brock missed two free throws and Kyle Jordan was unlucky to be whistled for an offensive foul at the other end. Singleton soon found Perez on a 3-on-1 break, but his lay-up rolled off the rim and Jordan fouled out on the ensuing scramble.

Colin McCarthy missed two more freebies, but Singleton reciprocated by missing the front end of a one-and-one. Lee-Webb missed a pair, before Mickens penetrated for two to tie the game at 64-64. Mickens and Irwin each made one of two from the line to give Albright a late lead, but Trawick banked one in with 19 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

Down by 13 early in the second half, Albright ripped off a 21-6 lead to inch ahead. Hall snapped a 14-0 Arcadia run, Perez drained a three-pointer and Jordan scored to get the Lions going. Singleton's basket was followed by a pair of hoops from Irwin that pulled Albright to within five, at 50-45.

The game was tied after a Singleton lay-in, and three straight points from Hall. Albright went into the lead at 52-50 on another Hall hoop, giving the big man five consecutive points in the game.

Freshman Jevin Zimmerman had played himself into the rotation for the first time on Saturday vs. Lebanon Valley. He entered the game 5:19 into the action and immediately made his presence felt with two buckets in under a minute to make it 10-9 Arcadia.

Albright trailed 18-13, but went back ahead after consecutive three-pointers from Perez and Singleton. The Lions then erased a 30-26 deficit with a Jordan jumper and a trey from Zimmerman. Down 31-30, Arcadia ended the first half with a 10-0 run that included triples from McCarthy and Jason Thompson.

Trawick's lay-up went soon stretch that run to 14, as Arcadia led 44-31 with 18:15 to play. The Knights would only score two field goals over the next seven minutes however, as Albright made a move.

The Lions improve to 11-7, 2-5, and are tied with Arcadia for last place in the Commonwealth standings. Howerver, the Lions are just a game out of a three-way log-jam for the fourth and final playoff spot, currently including Widener, Lebanon Valley and Elizabethtown. Albright hosts Messiah on Saturday- the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
