Kari Ludy scored a team-high 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting to lead the Albright College women's basketball team past Wilkes, 71-64 on Thursday in the Bollman Center.
Ludy added nine rebounds, just missing a double-double. Two other Lions did achieve that feat however- sophomore
Meghan Boyle (10 points, 14 rebounds) and senior
Jenny Knoebel (10 points, 11 rebounds, five assists). Freshman
Jessica Venturelli poured in 18 points as well.
The Lions led basically the entire way, never trailing again after a Boyle lay-up made it 5-4 Albright, 1:46 into the game.
With Wilkes attempting to come back late, Ludy released and Knoebel threw her a touchdown pass for a fast break bucket that made it 69-62 with a minute and a half remaining. Ludy then finished a put-back in the dying seconds to clinch the win.
Earlier, Ludy has twice fought off Wilkes runs, making a jumper to keep Albright ahead 47-42 and then scoring off the inbounds after the Colonels crept to within two points.
After a big three-point play from Wilkes'
Elena Stambone, Venturelli scored on the fast break to make it 53-50. Freshman
Amanda Tiritilli (14 points, 4-of-6 from behind the arc) later hit three-pointers that increased Albright's lead first to eight, then soon after to nine.
Early in the second half, Tiritilli hit two treys to push her team's advantage into double-digits, at 41-30. Wilkes'
Megan Kazmerski responded with a three-pointer on the next possession.
Albright jumped out to an early lead thanks also to a run of three-pointers. Venturelli hit a pair, sandwiching one by Knoebel, to put the Lions up 13-6.
After Wilkes had come as close as 22-19 on consecutive fast breaks, Boyle restored an eight-point advantage with a nice post move. Kazmerski answered right away with a three-pointer to stay within range.
Ludy made big plays before half time as well, finished an up-and-under and then making two free throws to put Albright up 22-15 after the Colonels' Angela Palmerio had answered with a reverse lay-up of her own. Ludy followed Knoebel's block and outlet pass with an and-one late in the first period.
Stambone made 8-of-17 shots and 5-of-10 threes to record a game-high 22 points. Allison Walsh added 15 points and guard Amanda Pawlowski totaled six assists and five steals, both game-highs.
The Lions improve to 4-8 and will travel to Haverford on Saturday at 1 p.m.
