Albright Falls Short Against Unbeaten Moravian, 60-57

Box Score

The Albright College women's basketball team jumped out to a 13-4 lead against undefeated Moravian and later made a second half surge, but the Lions came up just short in a 60-57 home defeat on Monday.

Junior Meghan Boyle made nine of 11 field goal attempts and finished with a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds). Sophomore Tara Sabotchick filled the box score with 11 points, 6 assists and 5 boards.

Sophomore Jessica Venturelli had 10 points, including several big shots late, and freshman Kelecia Harris totaled 13 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

Two minutes into the contest, junior Kristi McFadden saved a ball from going out of bounds, leading to a Boyle basket and Albright's first points of the night. McFadden then stole the ball and broke the other way for a 4-2 lead.

Consecutive assists by Sabotchick pushed the Lions lead to 10-4, and the sophomore then canned a three for a 13-4 advantage.

Moravian's Danielle Brogan (7-of-15, 19 points) answered with a three-pointer, and soon hit a corner three to push the Greyhounds into a 17-15 lead.

Late in the first half, Lion freshman Kadijah Bishop banked a tough shot for an Albright lead, but Brogan answered with another trey to tie the contest at 21-21. Sabotchick assisted Harris at the other end, but Brogan sank another long-ranger with a foot on the line to square things at 23-all.

Yet another triple from Brogan broke a 29-29 tie early in the second half, sparking a Moravian run. Katie O'Rourke's steal and lay-in made it 44-31, and Brogan sank another behind the arc for a 51-37 scoreline.

With just over eight minutes remaining, Venturelli made a corner three, then stole the ball and was fouled. She converted both free throws, before draining another three-pointer to cut the gap to 53-47.

With 3:41 left, consecutive blocks from Boyle and Harris led to Boyle's basket, off a bounce pass from Kari Ludy, and made it 55-51. The Lions had their chances but Venturelli was short on a long three and Harris missed both free throws after fighting for an offensive board. Amanda Kreuder's bank shot pushed the deficit back to six points in the final two minutes.

Albright is 2-2 on the season, while the Greyhounds improve to 5-0. The Red and White will open Commonwealth Conference play on Wednesday night with a trip to Arcadia.
