The Albright College men's basketball team opens league play tonight, traveling to face Arcadia on the road.
Commonwealth Conference Changes
Albright will play five Commonwealth games before Christmas break, compared to just two last season. This is due to the expansion of the league to 10 teams with the additions of Stevenson University and Hood College, resulting in an 18-game conference schedule and an extra playoff spot.
Albright College Lions (4-0, 0-0)
The Lions are off to a 4-0 start after a string of all-around performances from senior
Dave Singleton. In his first full season with Albright, the former Division I starter is averaging 17.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 4.0 steals per game.
Singleton was aided by a red-hot Lions backcourt in last week's 103-74 dismantling of King's College. Point guard
Sam Marrella hit 3-of-6 threes and finished with 15 points, and fellow junior guard
Reuel Moore had season-bests for Albright with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Marrella is averaging double-figures (10.5 ppg) so far this season, along with guard
Pedro Perez (11.5 ppg) and center
Zach Benjamin (11.3 ppg).
Arcadia University Knights (2-1, 0-0)
Arcadia is 2-1 after defeating Drew University twice in a row due to an unusual scheduling quirk. The Knights faced Drew in the consolation game of Muhlenberg's tip-off tournament, winning 68-48. They then faced the Rangers at home in a regularly-scheduled contest and were again 20-point victors, this time by an 85-65 scoreline.
Senior
Khalief Trawick leads the Knights in scoring with 15.0 ppg, while
Colin McCarthy (13.3 ppg) and
Joseph Brown (13.0) are also in double-figures. Brown leads the squad with 8.3 rebounds per game.
2011-12 Meetings
The Lions played a pair of exciting games against the Knights in 2011-12, winning two contests by a total of five points and kick-starting their run to the Commonwealth playoffs.
Albright won seven of its last eight regular season games to qualify for the playoffs on tiebreakers, and began that stretch with an 85-84 double-overtime win in Glenside. Perez sank a three-pointer to win after the Lions had to fight back from four points down in the second extra period.
Albright later beat Arcadia 70-66 at home to move within a victory of clinching a Commonwealth playoff spot. Albright led wire-to-wire but had to fight off a late Knights charge, led by two
Jason Thompson triples in the final two minutes.
Coaching Staffs
Rick Ferry begins his 12th year with a 4-0 start for the Lions in 2012-13. Under Ferry's direction the Lions have participated in six Commonwealth Tournament playoffs, winning the Commonwealth Tournament Championship and claiming NCAA Tournament berths in 2003-04 and 2009-10. Ferry was named Commonwealth Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons (2003-04 and 2004-05).
Justin Scott takes over as the Knights' head coach after two seasons as an assistant with Arcadia. He has also served as the athletic department's Academic Coordinator over that time period.
