The Albright College men's basketball team will face a brand-new Commonwealth Conference opponent on Saturday, traveling to play Stevenson University at 4 p.m.

Maryland Expansion

The Middle Atlantic Conference expanded to 18 teams in 2012, adding Stevenson and Hood, the only current MAC schools located in Maryland. Both institutions joined the Commonwealth Conference, meaning this year's league schedule has been expanded to 10 teams and 18 games. Five teams will now make the playoffs, with a 4/5 play-in game determining the final semifinalist.

Stevenson has been a member of the MAC in football for two years, challenging Albright this fall in a thrilling 29-22 overtime victory for the Lions. The Mustangs' field hockey team was the first to grab a MAC championship, winning the Commonwealth title this fall.

Albright College Lions (7-1, 3-1)

The Lions won a pair of games last week against 2011-12 Commonwealth playoff teams. Albright followed a comprehensive 84-61 home win over Widener with a 74-62 road victory over defending champion Messiah last Saturday.

Against Messiah, Junior Kyle Jordan led the way with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, just missing a double-double with nine rebounds. Senior Dave Singleton filled the box score again with 13 rebounds, eight points and seven assists. Also in double-figures for the Lions were Sam Marrella and Andre Marshall, who scored 10 points each and went a combined 5-of-8 from long range. Junior Pedro Perez had 14 points and six boards.

Singleton currently ranks sixth in the nation in assists (6.6 apg), 34th in steals (2.7 spg) and is also 31st in rebounding (10.5) despite playing as a guard.

Stevenson University Mustangs (4-3, 1-3)

The Mustangs are 3-4, and played their first five games of the season at home. Stevenson has had the opposite result of Albright against three common Commonwealth opponents, beating Alvernia but losing to both Widener and Arcadia.

Brett Burrier leads the squad with 15.1 ppg, while James Milton is the leading rebounder (8.0 rpg). The Mustangs are averaging 73.3 points while allowing 70.3 points per contest.

Head Coaches

Rick Ferry begins his 12th year with a 7-1 start for the Lions in 2012-13. Under Ferry's direction the Lions have participated in six Commonwealth Tournament playoffs, winning the Commonwealth Tournament Championship and claiming NCAA Tournament berths in 2003-04 and 2009-10.  Ferry was named Commonwealth Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons (2003-04 and 2004-05).

Gary Stewart is in just his second season at Stevenson, but his 18th overall as a head coach. He was a Division I head coach at UC-Davis, winning over 200 games in eight seasons there.
