Tonight's men's basketball game at the Bollman Center matches a pair of Commonwealth Conference semifinalists from last season, both of whom lost tough overtime decisions and are looking to reach the championship in 2012-13.
2011-12 Commonwealth Playoffs
Dave Singleton hit a pair of jumpers in the final minute to force overtime but then fouled out in the extra period as Albright ran out of gas in a 70-65 overtime loss to top-seeded Messiah, last year in the Commonwealth semifinals. Singleton finished with 17 points while
Derek Hall added 14 points and nine rebounds.
In Chester, Widener also fought back to force overtime, eliminating a 16-points second half deficit vs. visiting Lycoming.
Brian Smith had a three-pointer to win but it was off the mark as the Warriors prevailed 79-77 in OT.
In the final game of the regular season, Albright had beaten Widener 87-68 in the Bollman Center to qualify for the playoffs.
Albright (5-1, 1-1)
The Lions suffered their first loss of the season Saturday with a poor shooting performance against rival Alvernia. Albright shot 26.7% in the first half (34.7% for the game), and made just 3-of-25 three pointers (12%).
Singleton continued to challenge the triple-double mark, finishing with 16 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. For the season, Singleton is averaging 17.2 points, 10.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game. Freshman
Andre Marshall is averaging 10 points over the past two Commonwealth games, while fellow rookies
Calvert Gantz and
Johnathan Amoroso have also seen some court time early in the season.
Widener (1-4, 1-1)
The Pride are just 1-4, but grabbed an 80-70 win over Elizabethtown in their Commonwealth Conference opener thanks to
Greg Lawson's double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds).
2011-12 Commonwealth Player of the Year and All-American
Perry Wright has moved on, and Widener is now led by junior
Bob Makor (10.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and senior
Rob McPherson (9.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg).
Head Coaches
Rick Ferry begins his 12th year with a 5-1 start for the Lions in 2012-13. Under Ferry's direction the Lions have participated in six Commonwealth Tournament playoffs, winning the Commonwealth Tournament Championship and claiming NCAA Tournament berths in 2003-04 and 2009-10. Ferry was named Commonwealth Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons (2003-04 and 2004-05).
Chris Carideo is now in his 7th season in charge at Widener. A former All-American with the Pride and NCAA record-holder for three pointers made, Carideo has won five league championships and made five NCAA appearances as a head coach. The first two came at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and he then led Widener to Commonwealth titles in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09.
