Box Score
The Albright College women's basketball team made several second half runs but couldn't get all the way back, losing 64-55 to Commonwealth finalist Widener on Wednesday in the Bollman Center.
Freshman
Kelecia Harris had her best stat line of the season thus far, totaling 16 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots. Junior
Meghan Boyle also had 16 points, and sophomore
Jessica Venturelli added 11 points and six assists.
Down 34-19 early in the second half, the Lions went on an 8-0 run. Harris started things off with a hoop, and Venturelli's steal led to a
Tara Sabotchick lay-in.
Boyle then completed a post move, and Sabotchick's steal led to a Harris lay-up and a 34-27 scoreline. Widener's
Joanna Persiano broke the stretch with a dagger three-pointer.
After consecutive threes put the Pride ahead 45-31, Albright rallied again. Harris sank a pair of baskets, and
Amanda Tiritilli hit Boyle with a nice entry pass to make it 48-41.
With 9:38 to play, Boyle's pair from the line cut the deficit to 48-43. It was the closest Albright would get however, as the Pride responded with an 8-0 run. A Venturelli triple kept the Lions close at 56-48, but
Kristina Reiter's jumper with 4:13 to go pushed the gap back to 60-48.
Both squads struggled a bit with the fast pace in the first half, combining for 21 field goals and 25 turnovers. The Pride grabbed a 34-19 lead after shooting 48.4% from the floor, compared to 23.1% for Albright.
Boyle opened the scoring with a put-back, but Widener responded with a 10-0 run.
Francesca Lee and
Lil Carney assisted each other to make it 5-2, and
Vanessa Hejnas soon had a three-point play to push the score to 10-2.
Sabotchick fed Harris with a bounce pass on the fast break to break the Widener run. Carney scored off a turnover to put the Pride up 18-6 however, and Persiano soon made it 24-11 with a triple.
Albright freshman
Emily O'Donnell hit a baseline jumper with three minutes left in the half, cutting the deficit to 28-15. She then was fouled and made the basket, missing the and-one attempt but keeping the Red and White close at 32-19.
The Lions fall to 4-3, 2-1 on the season, and will travel to face Messiah on Saturday at 5 p.m. Widener is 5-2, 2-1.
