The Albright College women's basketball team has been much-improved in 2012-13, starting 2-0 in Commonwealth Conference play and only losing by three points to Moravian, who is receiving votes in the national polls. Now the Lions will be put to the test against one of the league's stronger programs when Widener visits the Bollman Center.
Thrilling Comeback
The Lions finished the game on a 20-2 run to grab a 62-60 victory over their biggest rival, shocking Alvernia on Saturday in the Bollman Center.
Freshman
Kelecia Harris had a big double-double (16 points, 14 rebounds). Sophomore
Amanda Tiritilli made three treys and finished with 11 points, and classmate
Tara Sabotchick had 10 points on perfect 4-of-4 shooting to go with six assists.
Down 58-42 with 6:25 to play, Tiritilli started things up with a three-pointer, and Sabotchick followed with a jumper on the next possession. Harris' layup cut the deficit to single-digits, with more than five minutes still left to play. Harris' put-back soon made it 58-51, and she followed an Alvernia miss with her sixth consecutive point to make it a five-point game and force a reeling Crusaders squad to call timeout. The Lions found themselves inbounding the ball with 21 seconds left and the shot clock turned off. Harris cut right to the hoop and finished off the lay-in for the winning points.
Albright College Lions (4-2, 2-0)
The Lions' run vs. Alvernia all came on the back of the same unit, as senior
Kari Ludy, sophomores Tiritilli and Sabotchick, and freshmen Harris and
Kadijah Bishop meshed perfectly down the stretch to pull back a game that appeared lost.
Sabotchick is second on the team in scoring (9.5 ppg), first in assists (22), and has an outstanding shooting percentage for a guard (.558). Harris leads the squad with 9.3 rebounds per game. Harris (.542), Sabotchick,
Emily O'Donnell (.647), Bishop (.571) and
Meghan Boyle (.569) are all shooting over 50% for a team that has made 47.3% of their shots while limiting opponents to just 35.7% from the field.
Widener University Pride (4-2, 1-1)
The Pride are 4-2 on the season, and 1-1 in Commonwealth play after a 69-62 loss to nationally-ranked Lebanon Valley. Widener led by as much as 12 in the game, and had an eight-point lead with 10 minutes to play, but shot just 20% from the field in the second half as the upset bid came up short.
Junior
Jennifer Egee has come off the bench to average a team-best 15.7 points per contest.
Kate Dellinger averages 11.3 points and a team-leading 8.8 rebounds per game, while
Lil Carney (10.7 ppg, 23 assists) is also in double-figures on the season.
75th Anniversary
2012 marks the 75th anniversary of women's basketball at Albright College. Albright Hall of Famer
Eva Mosser was named the first head coach when the program was officially approved in February, 1937. 24 female students attended tryouts the previous November, with 12 selected for the varsity squad. The Lady Lions played their first game on February 19, 1937, at Lebanon Valley College, and later welcomed LVC in March for their first official home contest.
Head Coaches
Janice Luck is in her 11th season as head coach of the Lady Lions, and also serves as the co-director of athletics at Albright College. Luck's 100th career victory came against Alvernia, as the Lions won by 20 points over the Crusaders late in the 2010-11 season.
Alisa Kintner has led Widener to a pair of Commonwealth Conference titles, winning the league and making trips to the NCAA tournament in 2003-04 and 2008-09.
Video/Audio Streaming
Albright basketball is now providing live video streaming of a majority of home games; contests are available for $5.95 for a single game or $19.95 for a three-month pass.
