The Albright College women's basketball team faces the number-eight team in the country on Saturday, with a trip to Messiah College.
Albright College Lions (4-3, 2-1)
The Lions are 4-3 overall, with single-digit losses to strong Moravian and Widener teams. Albright is also 2-1 in Commonwealth Conference play and looks like a team that should be in the mix for a playoff spot this season, following a seventh-place finish last year.
In Wednesday's loss to Widener, freshman
Kelecia Harris had her best stat line of the season thus far, totaling 16 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots. Junior
Meghan Boyle also had 16 points, and sophomore
Jessica Venturelli added 11 points and six assists.
Messiah College Falcons (6-0, 3-0)
The Falcons are ranked #8 in both national polls, and had a big 62-56 victory over then-#7 Lebanon Valley, thanks to 20 points from junior guard
Taylor Miller.
Messiah senior
Dori Gyori is a preseason All-American and averages 15.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Miller is averaging exactly 10 points per contest, while senior
Kira Maier is also in double-figures (13.5 ppg).
Head Coaches
Janice Luck is in her 11th season as head coach of the Lady Lions, and also serves as the co-director of athletics at Albright College. She earned her 100th career victory with a win over Alvernia late in the 2010-11 season.
Messiah's
Mike Miller is in his 27th season as head coach, leading the Falcons to 13 straight NCAA appearances, and two national championship games.
75th Anniversary
2012 marks the 75th anniversary of women's basketball at Albright College. Albright Hall of Famer
Eva Mosser was named the first head coach when the program was officially approved in February, 1937. 24 female students attended tryouts the previous November, with 12 selected for the varsity squad. The Lady Lions played their first game on February 19, 1937, at Lebanon Valley College, and later welcomed LVC in March for their first official home contest.
“40 Years at the Bru”
Messiah will be celebrating “40 Years at the Bru” at Saturday's games, marking the 40th year of Falcon basketball in the Brubaker Auditorium. Prizes and promotions will be conducted throughout the evening, former Messiah student-athletes will be in attendance, and Messiah students have been encouraged to wear 70's clothing for the occasion.
