The Albright College men's basketball team will put its season on the line Saturday in a Senior Day clash with Widener. A victory qualifies the Lions for the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, while a loss would eliminate them.

Playoff Outlook

Albright (16-8, 7-6) is now tied with Alvernia (7-6) for the final Commonwealth Conference playoff spot with Saturday's final games on the horizon. Albright and second-place Widener's (9-4) showdown will feature two of the hottest teams in the conference, as the Lions have won five in a row while the Pride have won seven straight.

The Lions control their own destiny on Saturday against Widener. A win will clinch either the third or fourth spot in the upcoming Commonwealth playoffs. A loss will automatically eliminate the Lions from playoff contention. The Lions will tipoff against Widener at 4 p.m. while Alvernia's game against third-place Lycoming (8-5) will start at 3 p.m.

Previous Meeting

Albright and Widener squared off before the holidays on Dec. 4, with the Pride taking a 74-66 victory. Albright erased a nine-point second half deficit and tied the game at 61-61 with under three minutes to go. However, with 6:12 to go in the game, Albright went 5:20 without a field goal as Widener pulled away. Cornell Mickens led Albright with 20 points, while Perry Wright and Brian Smith paced Widener with 18 points apiece.

Albright (16-8, 7-6)

Derek Hall and Dave Singleton have led Albright during the Lions' five-game winning streak. Hall has been the model of consistency all year long as the 6-11 senior center has averaged 15.8 points per game and 10.1 rebounds. He has also recorded 33 blocks. Singleton is the only other Lion to average double figures at 10.8 points per contest. In Tuesday's 70-66 win over Arcadia, the duo combined for 40 points and 26 rebounds.

Albright's other key contributors include sophomore forward Kyle Jordan (9.1 ppg, 32 blocks), sophomore guard Sam Marrella (5.7 ppg, 35 steals), sophomore Pedro Perez (6.5 ppg) and Mickens (7.9 ppg).

Widener (18-6, 9-4)

The Pride extended their winning streak to seven with a 91-70 victory over Lebanon Valley on Tuesday. Senior Jack Brennan had a double-double in the first half and finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Brennan is one of four Widener players to average double figures with 13.5 points per game, and he also leads the Pride in rebounding with 7.8 a game. Wright (15.8 ppg, 59 steals) leads Widener in scoring while Lamar Jackson (13.8 ppg, 79 assists) and Smith (12.3 ppg, 53-for-145 from behind the arc) are other scorers to look out for on Saturday.

Albright's Seniors

The Lions will honor senior captains Hall and Mark Christian prior to Saturday's contest. Hall, a three-year starter at center, has started 73 games and appeared in 98 total over his four-year career. He was a starter as a sophomore for Albright's Commonwealth Conference championship team in 2009-2010. He has accumulated 755 rebounds and 99 blocks in four years, and with five points on Saturday he will reach the 1,000 point plateau.

Christian has appeared in 24 games off the bench over the past four seasons. He has totaled 22 career points, 22 rebounds and will no doubt receive a rousing ovation from the fans when introduced on Saturday.

Swimming Teams to be Honored

The Albright College men's and women's swimming teams will be honored at halftime after both squads won the Middle Atlantic Conference championship. Head coach John Stuhltrager won both Coach of the Year awards. The men won nine individual events, set seven school records and two conference championship/pool records, and swam two NCAA “B” qualifying times in the process. Freshman Ricky Sutton earned both the Most Oustanding Swimmer and Rookie of the Year awards. The women won two individual events, while freshman Amanda Osterlind was named the Rookie of the Year.
