Women's Basketball Loses Senior Day Clash

Box Score

Departing captain Jenny Knoebel had a double-double on Senior Day, but the Albright College women's basketball team fell 86-65 at home to Widener, Saturday in the Lions' season finale.

Knoebel made all 10 of her free throws and finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Also turning in double-doubles were sophomore Meghan Boyle (6-of-7, 17 points, 14 boards) and junior Kari Ludy (12 points, 11 rebounds). Freshman Jessica Venturelli added 15 points.

The Lions pulled off a 19-2 run early in the second half to pull within four points, scoring on nine consecutive possessions. Knoebel hit Ludy underneath with a great pass from the top of the key, and Boyle finished a put-back the next time down the floor.

Boyle then found Venturelli for two, before the freshman scored again with a toe on the line to make it 47-34. Knoebel and Boyle followed with free throws, and Ludy's block led to Knoebel's three-pointer and a shrinking 49-42 visitor lead.

Venturelli followed with a three and then a free throw, completing Albright's stunning run and making it 49-45. The Pride would answer with free throws however, and then a turnover led to Kristina Reiter's jumper as the Widener lead soon ballooned back to double-digits.

Albright had hung tough with the Pride for the first half of the opening period before Widener ripped off a 22-2 run to break things open.

Ludy's athletic tip-in eight minutes into the contest had made it 18-14 Widener, and Knoebel then found Boyle with a great pass over the top to pull within two points.

Albright would manage only two made field goals over the last 11:14 of the first half however, as Widener surged ahead to lead 45-26 at the break.

Early on, the Pride's Kate Dellinger made a three to kick off the scoring and then had another trey attempt roll out. Lil Carney hit Francesca Lee with a great lob pass and Widener opened up a 7-0 advantage before Venturelli got Albright on the board with a pair from the free throw line.

Ludy's put-back had the Lions close at 7-4, but another Dellinger three-pointer soon had the visitors ahead 12-4. Boyle's post move completed a run of four consecutive Albright points, before Dellinger answered with a toe on the line.

Carney had kick-started Widener's big first half run, scoring five consecutive points to begin the streak. Jennifer Egee would later hit back-to-back treys to make it 40-18 Pride.

Before tip-off, the Lions recognized seniors Knoebel and Crystal Cline in their final collegiate contest. Albright finishes its 2011-12 campaign at 6-19, 2-12, while Widener (17-8, 10-4) will travel to Messiah on Wednesday for a Commonwealth Conference semifinal.
