Lions Fall Just Short at Elizabethtown

Box Score

Despite fighting back from 12 down and tying the contest on multiple occasions, the Albright College women's basketball team couldn't quite break through in a 65-62 loss, Saturday at Elizabethtown.

The game was tied six different times but Albright never managed to seize the lead away from the hosts. Elizabethtown's Jayci Scannapieco blocked Jenny Knoebel's three-point attempt at the buzzer to clinch the three-point decision.

Knoebel finished with 16 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Sophomore Meghan Boyle did accomplish that feat, with 16 points and 13 boards.

Freshman Jessica Venturelli had 12 points and three blocks, while junior Kari Ludy was also in double-figures with 10 points.

Down by 12 after a Kendra Beittel three-pointer with 3:41 left in the first half, the Lions clawed back to within five at the break. A pair of baskets by Knoebel sandwiched a Boyle hoop, and McFadden answered Scannapieco's free throw to make it 35-30 at halftime.

Albright freshman Amanda Tiritilli opened the second half scoring with a three-pointer, before Taylor Kreider finally broke an E'town streak of almost six minutes without a field goal.

Three times, the Lions came back to within a point before completing the comeback. Jenny Knoebel's three-pointer made it 49-48 with 8:33 to play, and Venturelli's basket made it 51-50 a minute later. Ludy then hit a jumper with 6:13 remaining to keep Albright within one at 53-52.

Knoebel hit one of two free throws to finally tie the game, and Venturelli's basket with 4:39 left marked the final time that the contest was deadlocked.

Stephanie Ellwood's lay-up with seven seconds remaining made it a three-point game and Scannapieco's block finished things off for the Blue Jays.

Beittel had a game-high 20 points, while Kreider (15 points, 10 rebounds) had a double-double.

Albright is 5-16, 1-9 and will host local rival Alvernia on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Elizabethtown is 14-6, 7-3 and has a two-game lead over fifth place with four games left to play.
