A four-run inning in the opener was one of the few highlights as the Albright College baseball team was swept by crosstown rival Alvernia on Monday, losing 9-4 and 14-2.
The Lions trailed 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth in game one, but rallied with four runs in the inning. Freshman
Zac Okonski led off with a triple, and scored on
Max Dundore's single. Sophomore
Nate Peiffer's two-RBI double soon scored Dundore and
Alex Myers, before he was brought home by
Jon Raymond.
Albright continued to threaten in the sixth inning, putting the first two men on base, but a double-play caused them to leave empty-handed.
Peiffer was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored for Albright, while fellow sophomore
Collin Hecker was 2-for-3.
Seth Heffner pitched 2.1 solid innings of relief, allowing three hits and just one unearned run.
Aaron Benusis earned the win for the Crusaders, going five innings and not allowing a hit until Hecker's two-out single in the bottom of the fourth.
Matt Patterson (3-3, 2 RBIs, 2 runs),
Andrew Bailey (3-4, 2 RBIs, run) and
AJ Bennett (2-3, 2 RBIs) all contributed at the plate for Alvernia.
In the nightcap, Peiffer again led the way for Albright with a 2-for-3 performance, adding an RBI and a run scored. Senior
Tom Canuso was 1-for-2.
Alvernia got another solid starting pitching performance, this time from
Steve Price (6 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 3 K's). Bailey (4-4, 3 RBIs, run),
Chris Ray (3-3, 2 runs) and
Rory Clemens (3-5, 2 runs) all had three-hit games at bat.
The Lions are 10-17, 3-6 and play at Moravian tomorrow. Alvernia (19-7-1, 8-1) is in first place in the Commonwealth Conference.
