Lions Lose at Widener Despite 21-18 Double-Double from Harris

Box Score

The Albright College women's basketball team got as close as six points in the second half but Widener ran away late, as the Lions fell 69-53 in Chester, Pa.

Freshman Kelecia Harris had another big double-double, totaling 21 points and pulling down 18 rebounds- a career-high and the most by a Lion player this season. She also blocked three shots.

Fellow freshman post player Emily O'Donnell just missed a double-double, with 10 board and nine points on the day. Sophomore Tara Sabotchick added seven points, six rebounds and five assists.

Widener created 10 more second-chance points, off eight offensive rebounds, to take a ten-point lead at halftime, 36-26.

Harris opened the scoring just eight seconds in, but Lil Carney soon hit a three-pointer to give Widener a 5-2 lead. Another Harris lay-in kept the Lions within a point at 7-6, with Vanessa Hejnas answering at the other end.

Two baskets from Meghan Boyle made it 14-10 Pride, but the hosts responded with a 12-0 run to open up a gap. Kari Ludy made a free throw, and Harris followed with a bucket, to break Albright's scoreless stretch.

Neither team made a field goal for a stretch of 5:23 late in the first half, with free throws from Sabotchick (three) and Harris (one) the only points. Jennifer Egee broke that run and put Widener's lead back into double-digits with a hoop that made it 28-17 with 3:06 left before halftime.

O'Donnell and Harris scored to open the second half as Albright got to within six, at 36-30. A three-pointer by Jessica Venturelli with 15:28 to play made it 42-35, but Widener responded with seven straight points, including a three from Joanna Persiano to gave the Pride a 49-35 lead.

Albright couldn't get any closer than 12 points as Persiano and Carney again hit threes, pushing the gap to 19 points, 59-40, with 8:23 remaining. After two free throws from Brianna Wylie, the Pride pushed down the floor off a defensive rebound and Wylie scored again for a 23-point lead.

Turnovers were again an issue for the Lions as they committed 32 of them- their highest total of the season.

Carney led Widener with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals- all team-highs for the Pride. Egee added 13 points.

Albright is 7-10, 3-7 and faces a must-win home game against Arcadia on Wednesday, before hosting league-leaders Messiah next weekend.
