After starting 2013 off with a win against Misericordia, the Lions look to continue building on a six-game winning streak that dates back to the beginning of December as they welcome the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown to the Bollman Center for a 2 p.m. tip off this Saturday.
Previous Meeting
In February of last year, the Lions traveled to Elizabethtown, Pa. and dealt the host Blue Jays a 72-58 defeat. Led by a double-double by senior
Derek Hall (15 points, 12 rebounds) and 16 points from sophomore
Kyle Jordan, the Lions led from the opening tip to the ending buzzer. Redshirt sophomore
Pedro Perez added 14 points to the win, and junior
Dave Singleton chipped in with six assists to help the Lions' playoff aspirations at the time.
Albright College Lions (11-1, 4-1 Commonwealth)
The Lions are coming off their second win of the season over a team who qualified for the NCAA tournament with their victory over the Cougars of Misericordia. A 68-48 win over the Cougars helped Albright run its winning streak to six games and improve to 11-1 overall on the 2012-13 season.
Singleton and Perez lead the Lions in scoring with 14.9 and 12.4 points per game, respectively. Singleton also leads the team in assists, dishing out 5.8 helpers per game.
Elizabethtown College Blue Jays (3-7, 1-4 Commonwealth)
Non-conference wins over Susquehanna and Gwynedd-Mercy and a conference win over Hood College account for the three victories on the season for the Blue Jays. E-Town is coming off of three incredibly close games in a row- a 65-64 victory over Hood, a 70-68 loss against McDaniel, and a 77-76 win over Gwynedd-Mercy.
Blue Jays coach
Bob Schlosser leans on junior
Joe Schwalm to try and get his team back into the win column. Schwalm leads the squad with 13.1 points per game. Schlosser also looks to senior guard
Joe Renzi to keep finding his teammates for open looks at the basket. Renzi is averaging 4.3 assists per game for the Blue Jays.
Commonwealth Conference Playoff Picture
As the top five teams from each conference make the playoffs, the Lions have put themselves in a good spot to advance to the tournament. The Lions are in second place in the Commonwealth Conference with a plethora of league games still to go. Albright trails Lycoming in the standings by one game, while holding a one-game lead over Messiah and Arcadia for second place in the conference. With wins against both Messiah and Arcadia already, and two games to go against Lycoming, the playoff race is just heating up as we get into the New Year.
Looking Ahead
The Lions will look to continue to build on their winning streak next week with a home game against new conference foe Hood College and with a trip to Lebanon Valley College. The Lions will host Hood on January 9 with a start time of 8 p.m. The Lions will then travel to Annville, Pa. for a critical match-up with the Dutchman. The start time for that game is 2 p.m.
