The Lions open Commonwealth Conference play on Tuesday, with a road game against 2013 NCAA Elite Eight qualifier Widener University.
Previous Meeting
Albright got as close as six points in the second half but Widener pulled away late, as the Lions fell 69-53 in Chester, Pa. last January.
Kelecia Harris had another big double-double, totaling 21 points and pulling down 18 rebounds. She also blocked three shots.
Lil Carney led Widener with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals- all team-highs for the Pride.
Jennifer Egee added 13 points.
Albright College Lions (2-1)
Albright lost for the first time this season on Saturday, falling 72-62 on the road to Moravian- a team getting votes in the national polls.
The Lions jumped out to a 14-2 run but were undone by a combination of All-American forward
Alexis Wright (16 points, 14 rebounds), and the fact that their own best post player, Harris, was limited to 23 minutes due to foul trouble.
Freshman
Shannon Thomas scored in double-figures for the second time in three games, totaling 13 points. Sophomore
Emily O'Donnell is converting 72.2% from the floor (13-of-18) this season, while Harris (65.7%) and Thomas (61.1%) are also shooting well.
Widener University Pride (2-1)
The Pride were ranked #25 in the USA Today Coaches poll after season-opening victories vs. Hollins (72-62) and Dickinson (78-58), but are expected to drop out when today's poll is released following a 73-58 loss to Cabrini over the weekend.
Last year's Widener squad became the most successful in program history, going 16-2 in the Commonwealth and earning an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament despite a semifinal loss to Lebanon Valley. The Pride then ran off victories over FDU-Florham, #9 Catholic and #16 Messiah to reach the Elite Eight, before finally losing to #4 Amherst in the quarterfinals.
All-American guard
Kate Dellinger graduated, but is now with the team as an assistant coach. Egee (18.0 ppg) and
Ally Ferucci (17.7 ppg) have carried the scoring load so far this season.
Head Coaches
Janice Luck is in her 12th season as head coach of her alma mater, and was the 2007-08 WBCA Regional Coach of the Year. Widener's
Alisa Kintner was the D3hoops.com Regional Coach of the Year last season, after leading the Pride to the Elite Eight.
