Box Score
The Albright College women's basketball team was eliminated from playoff contention after Lycoming wrapped up a season sweep of the Lions, and fifth place in the Commonwealth Conference, with a 49-39 victory in Williamsport, Pa.
The Red and White took a double-digit lead into the second half but went 11:19 without a field goal as the Warriors overturned that deficit.
Freshman
Kelecia Harris had team-highs with nine points, eight rebounds and three steals. Classmate
Emily O'Donnell had eight points, while junior
Meghan Boyle pulled down six boards.
The Lady Lions played outstanding defense in the first half, holding their opponents to 19.2% shooting from the floor and just 13 points. The Warriors missed all 12 of their first half three-point attempts, and also made just 3-of-7 from the line.
Harris opened the scoring after a minute and a half, and
Jessica Venturelli soon sank a three for a 5-2 Albright lead.
Albright grabbed a five-point advantage mid-way through the first half, on a basket from O'Donnell. Boyle's jumper made it 22-13, and
Kari Ludy tacked on one free throw as the Lions held Lycoming scoreless over the final 7:06 of the half (following
Olivia Manges' fast break bucket).
Albright turnovers on their first six possessions of the second half, allowed Lycoming to break their slump with an easy fast break lay-up. The Warriors soon cut the gap to 23-20 on
Rachel Scheller's three-pointer.
Ali Derr's jumper made it 24-23 Lycoming after another giveaway, forcing Albright to take a timeout. Ultimately, the Lions would commit turnovers on nine of their first 10 possessions after the break, with the last two leading to
Janelle Ziminski's fast break lay-in and a Manges jumper that pushed the scoreline to 28-23.
Boyle finally took the ball hard into to the lane to break a 15-0 run and make it 28-25 Lycoming. The Lions then found Harris underneath, to keep Albright down by five, 32-27.
Harris cut it to 37-33 with a put-back, and
Tara Sabotchick's corner shot pulled Albright to within two points with less than five minutes remaining. Scheller hit two free throws with 2:12 remaining to make it 41-35 however, and then pulled down a missed three-pointer at the other end as the Warriors held off Albright.
Albright falls to 11-13, 7-10, and will conclude its season at Elizabethtown on Saturday. Lycoming (8-15, 8-9) will travel to Elizabethtown on Monday for the Commonwealth Conference's play-in game, following a regular season finale at Hood.
